Death Stranding is a AAA game that isnt AAA - But people still hate on it. SAD
We constantly see miscers on this section whine, complain and cry about how all AAA games made by the biggest studios and publishers are all the same:
- They're woke
- All about politics
- They're safe
- They're boring
- They're samey
- They dont do anything different
Death Stranding is a AAA game. The game has incredible presentation, graphics and made by a renowned studio, veteran devs and under the guidance of one of the industries most celebrated video game directors - Hideo Kojima.
Yet this game is the complete anti-thesis to what people expect from one of the biggest publishers (sony) and developers (Kojima productions).
- The game took a huge risk with its gameplay
- It's the furthest thing you can imagine from a typical Hideo Kojima game
- The entire genre + style of game was new and different from what you expect from most games
- The game has no woke elements
- No politics
Kojima created a AAA game with "unique" gameplay elements and something so far off from what people expect AAA games to be by taking risks and doing something different, but then people start to whine and complain that it's not the AAA experience that they expected - They wanted guns, huge setpieces and basically just disregarded the game as a FEDEX simulator.
Damned if you do, damned if you dont.

Death Stranding was a good game, but I have no interest in playing it again or a sequel.

Just because gamercels want something different doesn't mean they want something boring. If 95% of the game is walking then I don't see that as compelling gameplay even though it's very different. I did see some other elements to the gameplay like when you're getting attacked by the aliens but that's far in between.
Additionally, the story is off its fuking rockers. Kojima just adds a whole bunch of weird elements and dialogs that make no fuking sense. I tried watching a playthrough of DS1 and I promise I gave it about 3 hours of viewing and I still had no idea what in the actual PHUK was even happening.
Without looking it up online can you give me a breakdown of what the plot is about? Even watching the DS2 trailer and all he did was dial up the weirdness even further and the gameplay looks to largely be more of the same. I see alot of the sentiment online that "I had enough of that gameplay with DS1 and have no real motivation to do it again"

Well, Kojima is a wacko who has a cult like following, but I'm glad to see there are still people who don't worship the ground he walks on. Never understood people who are not creative geniuses being touted as such. Also, 99% if not all AAA games are either broken, woke, or are money pits, or all of the above, so AAA means nothing anymore. Indie is where the best stuff is and also remakes / remasters of past AAA games.
You're welcome.

3 hours of viewing is not 3 hours of playing and getting immersed in it. You need to actually experience it yourself before you hate on it. The game isnt about a lesbian trying to defeat robotic dinosaurs, it's about helping a lesbian build bridges and connect people using robotic assistants. If you actually played the game for yourself you'd understand.

Kojima is a hack and an embarrassment Japanese gaming. The guy is that loser who desperately wants to impress Westoid cucks.
Metal Gear series has always been on rails and scripted gameplay garbage. Every thing Kojima does is pretentious trash with no actual gameplay substance.
"cinematic experience" has gone on to become Western meme, but never forget that it was this f4gg0t Kojima that started this trend with MGS1.

Basically, I think MGS3 was the last great game he made and it's a game that is now 20 years old. Ever since he's been some overrated hack coasting off his fame.

I'm still glad he's out there doing experimental chit though. Dude could easily just pump out Ubitrash tear stuff and rake it in. Say what you want, but dude always puts out quality. Even if DS wasn't really my bag. GOAT dev
I'm hoping he improves on the stealth/combat in this one and balances out the ratio to the travel. If there's better balance there, I'll still be onboard. Otherwise, I'll hold out for the espionage game and the horror game he's working on.

Kojima is a one trick pony hack, who's been making the exact same style of movie game dating back to Policenaut and Snatcher. The f4gg0t literally cannot and does not know how to make any other sort of genre of video games besides stealth (to avoid having to think up actual action gameplay lmao) cinematic movie games.
It says so right there in the wiki. The original Meta Gear was handed to him by another director, and the first change he made to the gameplay was to change it into a stealth game. He's been making the exact same game for 30+ years.
Kojima is a pretentious brainlet who doesn't understand how to actually make videogames.

If anything, it was a commendable effort by a renowned dev and big studio to do something different and not follow every other developer following the samey kind of genre and gameplay.
It is still possible to dislike a game, but still appreciate it for what it's trying to do and the risks it's taking by introducing new elements and ways of playing.

I can't even tell you the plot for phantom pain or mgs 4 ... The only game that kind of made sense was MGS3.
As for the gameplay -
It's a pretty relaxing game. You have to figure out your delivery load out and optimize it in the best way possible. You need to plan out proper routes (High risk/High reward).
The game was gorgeous with its landscape so it was a pretty therapeutic experience trying to make it from point a to b and to c with your deliveries - adding on some risk with enemies .
You had to battle the elements and the environment during your deliveries and find the path of least possible resistance.
The strand feature was really cool, with people's structures being put in convenient areas or places you'd never think would work out
You want to help out other players and put things that can ease their travel and it's always a nice feeling when they send thanks your way
Again, this is a game for a very patient type of person and not someone who needs to be stimulated every few seconds. You need to be in a certain mood and completely immerse yourself in the process. The game isn't perfect, it has a lot of flaws and could have done somethings better/differently ...... But the game is different and unique and that's why I appreciate it.
Honestly breh, I'd ask you to give it a shot again .... It took me three tries before the game clicked with me lol.

Death Stranding does not even qualify as a game. It's just a computer program. A simulator consisting of walking and carrying things. Hideo Cuckjima is ass is so far into his head. The most egotistical self-centered, and over rated game dev in the HISTORY of gaming. His heads so far up his own ass he promoted his own game by rendering himself in the ad for the game...
But fine, let's actually judge this computer program as if it's a game. Death Stranding is an abomination and an embarrassment. I sincerely apologize to anyone who wasted $70 on this AAA "game".
But with that being said, this is the most frustrating game I've ever played. It makes me wonder if Kojima made it just to frustrate people in every way possible, or to see how far he could go with making such a terrible game and still have his fanbase revere him. Everything from the constantly annoying mechanics, the terrible vehicle controls, that ****ing BB that cries right out of your controller if you fall and only sometimes shuts up when you try to soothe it with bad motion controls, god awful combat (yes I know combat isn't the focus of this game but that doesn't mean that it should be this bad when you have to use it), the BT's that are cool at first but soon become nothing more than a nuisance, the pain in the ass cut scenes when you drop off a package, the constant pestering by the other characters (I really, really disliked the entire main cast), and the frustrating UI made me wishing that I never bought the game. I wanted to like it so I kept giving it the benefit of the doubt and by the time that I accepted how much I hated the game I was far enough in that I wanted to finish the story so I could say that I finished it.
One of the things that I noticed about the game when I first started it was how pretty the game looked, in the first area where you're walking through luscious greenery and up mountains next to flowing rivers. I thought it looked gorgeous and was really impressed. And granted the graphics are good but once you hit the third chapter the areas start to look uninteresting. For hours you're walking through just plain rock and blizzards that just don't have much to look at and the really pretty sights become less common. It's still pretty and this is one of my lesser complaints but it was a disappointment for me seeing so much blandness after being so taken away by the aesthetics at the start of the game.
But oh god the story. I know a lot of people like the story but it just pisses me off. I think what I hate most in fiction is storytellers being "weird for the sake of being weird" - being intentionally confusing or complex without much substance to make the story seem interesting but not having much actual purpose, and DS is the best example I can think of for that sin. There's way, way too much **** going on and throughout the game and especially nearing the end Kojima is clearly just trying to confuse you and make you think "oh wow this is so deep and complex". To me it feels like the video game version of something you'd see in a high school writing class written by a student who thinks he's smarter and more intellectual than everyone else in the room so that they get to stroke their egos when everybody is confused by their work so they can feel smarter than everyone else. The pacing is also terrible - tons of **** happening at the start and the end of the game with almost nothing happening for hours in the middle.
I know that a lot of people like this game and I'm not trying to put anybody down if they do. But man oh man do I hate this game, and at times when I've seen people express similar opinions online I've seen some of its defenders repeat Kojima's shtick about how people are just too used to shooters. I don't need tons of action to enjoy a game - one of my favourite games is Detroit: Become Human and I think that's a good example of a game in which you don't actually do a whole lot but it grips you with a fantastic narrative that really makes you think. Death Stranding doesn't do that.
I'm writing this because ever since the director's cut was announced I keep seeing **** about Death Stranding on my youtube front page and it keeps reminding me of that awful headache of a week I had when I played this game.
Death Stranding is, unequivocally, the worst video game I've ever played.
The first thing you need to know is that this is a $60 AAA game released in 2019 in which you spend most of your time managing weight and trying not to fall down.
I would have considered that a rip-off twenty years ago. I don't have the vocabulary to describe what I consider it now. The mechanics are utterly arbitrary. Some people have referred to Death Stranding as a 100-hour walking sim. But 100-hour falling sim would be more accurate. The infuriating part is that the weight/balance mechanics add nothing to what might have been a great story in a beautiful, disturbing and completely unique game world. Indeed, those and any other positive elements of Death Stranding are rendered moot by the utter tedium of playing it.
I know that more efficient means of transport are eventually available through progression. But making the latter parts of a game tolerable by making its early parts insufferable is a valid business model for a free-to-play game on iOS, not a AAA game on an 8th-gen console.
And it actually gets worse. Much. Worse.
Imagine a frustratingly tedious part from any game that you've played in the past. Maybe it's the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time or The Library in Halo. Now imagine playing through those with a baby crying at the top of its lungs. Because that's a mechanic in Death Stranding. Yup. A group of ostensibly qualified and intelligent men and women sat together in a room and thought, "Hey, you know what's missing from this game that's already super-annoying to play? Babies screaming!" It's absolutely baffling how this became a thing. It's an April Fool's prank that someone forgot to remove before release day.
I did not finish this game. Not even close. On release day, I wrote this review in my head. I've given Death Stranding another chance, multiple times. And each and every time I do this, I come to the same conclusion: Death Stranding is a chore to play. The story is great. The world is surreal and breathtaking. But actually playing the game is just not fun.
I want games to be challenging. I want to get stuck on a puzzle or wipe multiple times on a difficult boss. Elements like this add immeasurable value to beating a game. But triumphing over falling down? Spending 90% of a modern game walking around? Being quick enough with the mute button that you don't have to hear a wailing infant? Where is the value in those achievements and why would anyone be proud of achieving them?
I know this review is going to get a lot of hate and of course there are people who love Death Stranding. These are good things. The industry needs diversity, lest GameStop's shelves be filled with CoD or Fortnite clones. But for me, Death Stranding is "different" to a fault. Its mechanics are arbitrary and frustrating and could be removed almost entirely without hurting the narrative. If you love Hideo Kojima's other games, you might be able to get through the tedium of this one. But if you're not a fan, this is probably not a game you're going to love (or finish).
I’m a big mgs fan but Kojima def sniffs his own farts. Never played death stranding cause it looked boring and dumb.
MGS1 had the best story cause it was simple, ending of MGS2 was kinda dumb and hard to follow and I remember mgs4 being similar but played it a decade ago.
Recently replayed mgs1-3 on ps5 (master collection) and the OG ps1 game was my favorite tbh.

I think what Kojima does is like video game anime. Very weird stories with odd characters.
I feel like Kojima turned anime into a video game and kinda was the first to do it like that. People try to call it Sci fi but I don't think Kojima does Sci fi. I think he does anime. But he kind of bridges the gap between the two. Idk if that makes sense I'm high af. His stories and characters just remind me of anime more than it does Sci fi.
And I feel about his games the same way I do about anime. Some is awesome and brilliant, some is cringe and dumb.
