Did not know that was a thing, yea think that is a bit excessive, but animals tend to ruin homes, are a liability, and sadly most people that own pets do not properly train them.
I let friends stay at my cabin and every one of them that had a dog swore it was house trained..every one of their dogs pissed or puked in my cabin. Now I'm simply done letting people stay there.

As a renter, I don't like it but I 100% understand why it has to exist.
1. Its not your house. Kittens and puppies need to be bathroom trained and in that process there will be mistakes on the carpet before they learn
2. pets shed not only fur, but dander, and no matter how well you steam clean the place, it can still be a problem for the next tenants that may have a dog/cat allergy
3. pets are destructive. Dogs like to rough-house (chew on door handles) and cats like to scratch at things (the walls/carpet)
4. The pet owner doesn't notice the odors or damage done by their pet because they live with the thing 24/7 but damage is certainly done by that animal.

I have never, and will never, rent to anyone with pets.

Dogs and cats destroy everything. I honestly don't understand why tf apartment dwellers get dogs, at least cats can be somewhat quiet and tame, a fukking dog even the littlest one will scratch, piss, chit, and gnaw at all sorts of random chit. "Rescue dogs" are the worst, especially if they've been with an ass hole of an owner or abandoned for any length of time. Source: my wife just got a fooking rescue dog. FML.

nothing more selfish than owning a larger dog in an apartment...

I've had a fee for my cat since I got her, both in my old apartment leases, and my newer ones. Always $20-30/mo.
I find it dumb because I'll be paying for the damage costs on top of that too. It makes more sense in my mind, if the $20-30/mo was added to the security deposit, for whenever I move out and they assess the damages. Otherwise it's just nothing but a net loss on the renter and kinda scummy of the landlord.
I've had my cat at my place for going on 3 years, and she has scratched various wall edges to where they need replacement. Not looking forward to my damages bill when I move out.

Waiting till you move out and expecting to be hit with a damage bill only reassures the landlord that they were justified in asking you to pay extra every month. Justsayin..look at it from their perspective.
Never liked cats, but recently got the feels for this kitten I saw at the pet store, turns out she is a great lil cat, very talkative, affectionate, and always wants to be around, unfortunately she is also scratching the hell out of my furniture, tearing up my baseboards and chewing on wires..this will be the one and only cat I ever own.

I live in a building where it clearly says pets are not permitted.
Shortly after I moved in I heard barking next door. Find out my neighbor lied about needing a service dog and thus has a big old dog in her apartment.
It doesn't bark too much, maybe once or twice a day, and she's good about taking it out for a walk if that happens, but still, kind of lame that people get away with that.

But everyone started getting "emotional support animals", which meant that landlords couldn't legally turn people down for having animals if they went online and printed some form from a hack doctor. So now that the landlords are obligated to take these pets in, they decided to charge for it.
It only makes sense. Dogs create tons of wear and tear, and make noise to piss off other tenants. No landlord wants a dog living in their unit. So if you need to have a dog, you gotta pay.
