Fukn lol if you do more than 1 set per exercise.

To clarify, it should be 2-4 sets of ~80% effort gradually increasing weight for warm-up

And then you do 1 set all out to failure

Merely duplicating a 2nd set achieves nothing because your muscles have already received that stimulus

Actually, the worst thing you can do is more sets because you are causing unnecessary stress which leads to overtraining

I just try to get a massive pump. More sets usually equates to a bigger pump, up to a point

Literally bigger and stronger than he was

He was halfway right to an extent but you need to do different styles of training in order to get the best results

The guy didn't even practice what he preached, and built his base through volume training.

Mentzer ended up being wrong. Mentzer acknowledged he was wrong before he died. He did extra 'fluff' sets just in case the extra volume could help. And his training system wasn't sustainable over a long term. He died kind of skinny fat, still an addicted gym rat who lifted all the time, and had a drug addiction.

Mentzers style of training is more effective then people that never really push themselves. But lets not pretend that just one set to failure on a muscle is going to adequately stimulate all heads and in turn make it grow to its fullest potential in an aesthetic manner.

We know through modern science and the skilled application from thousands of body builders over the years that muscles have various heads, that get targeted differently based on exercise selection/angle. And the most successful bodybuilders train said muscles through various angles/exercises.

Dorian Yates is probably the most successful bodybuilder who followed those principles and he ended up with a much higher volume routine, that really looks like a lot of other bro splits except he takes final sets to failure.

2-3 lighter sets warming up and then 1 heavy set and then 1 max set to failure. But he did multiple exercises per body part to hit different angles/areas. Same basic pyramid up in weight except he grinded to failure on the last set.

For strength, I think one set can be nearly optimal. Especially if you're relatively strong.

For hypertrophy? Not so much.

That's what I mean, even Dorian would train like six days a week, two of the days, it would be a light AB workout and then a half hr of medium intensity cardio. We all saw Blood and Guts, he warmed up, and then would do an intense set. He was in the gym for about 50-60 minutes, but he also had the whole gym to himself when he competed because it was HIS gym.
