Anyone buy a beater car and just get state min insurance coverage?
I have a mighty Dodge Ram with a powerful Hemi engine lurking beneath the hood. An amazing machine. Efforless thrust. Chicks be 'mirin. It's the Lone Star trim here in Texas (Big Horn), witch is popular here. I bought it new a few months ago.
It's expensive.
I put $20K down from an inheritance I got, but my payment is still $500 and the insurance is $287 per month, for sort of medium coverage with Progressive. State Farm and Farmers want $400 per month for mostly the same coverge.
I likely have about $12K inequity in it.
I might let CarMax buy it off me and pay cash for some pha660tmobile for awhile and just get state minimum coverage.

i had a 1997 subaru impreza that i bought for $900 in 2012 as a spare car.
Thing wouldn't go into 2nd gear half the time, suspension was shot, but thing wouldn't die.
Had to get rid of it because it wouldn't pass emissions and wasn't worth fixing.

Getting the lowest coverage is an absolutely poverty mindset thing to do.
I quickly learned in my 20's that is WAY BETTER to max out your coverages. Sure your rate goes up a hundred bucks a year, but you go from 20k, to a million in coverage.
If you hit someone with a BMW/Audi/Ferarri/etc and you only have 20k coverage, the damage will likely be chitloads more than it. Their ins will COME AFTER YOU for the rest.
You're just fukcing yourself over by being a cheap ass. Either spend a couple hundred now, or pay tens of thousands in the future.

Regarding coverage, also true, if you have any assets worth protecting, get higher level coverage. I also carry an umbrella policy just in case, too easy for garbage people to hire 'morgan and morgan' or whatever free legal ambulance chaser service.

If you are poor or coming up in the world then chitbox car plus basic insurance might be fine. But as you get older/more money then your car isnt what you need insurance to protect, or even your physical self, but instead your assets.

Could be the case where he is, particularly if he lives in a major city.

I';m creeping up on 52 and am in Texas. My credit score is still kind of low from when the bottom dropped out for me in 2018, and I think that matters.

I spent my entire life doing this. Usually have 2 vehicles in case one breaks dont and its not economical to fix it. Scrap it and drive the back up, buy another secondary beater.
Sounds like it would not make financial sense but if you can get 3 years and 50k miles out of a 3k car thats pretty good. Some get way more. my last beater van I had for like 15 years. It pretty much just rotted away due to age.
