They'll add on extra penalties, so if you owed them $500 from five years ago now it's $3000. It gets even worse than all that.Credits vs deductions
People who actually earn real incomes during the year usually offset their taxes with deductions (think itemizing deductions and every category that encompasses). In theory you could offset all of your taxes paid with deductions and owe $0 for the year.
Credits are literally just getting money back and have nothing to do with anything outside of the government giving you money (EITC is just one example, but there are many). In theory, you could start with $0 owed because you didn't earn enough to hit the standard deduction anyway, and then get several thousand dollars in credits where the government is just writing you a check.
And before I make this last point, I'm guilty of it too. But the admonishing people for getting tax refunds as stupid is actually misguided. Yes, if you're in the 45% of the country that actually pays taxes, getting a refund means you gave the government an interest free loan. For the 55% of people whodon'tpay taxes though, none of that applies. And then there's the 35% who fall into that second category that not only don't pay taxes, but also just load up on credits and get a giant fat "refund" check at the end (except it's not a refund since they paid $0).
Finally, if you don't believe my numbers, please look them up yourself. If you pay taxes, you're in the minority in the country. Seriously. Themajorityof people pay literally $0. And then we have people with the gall to say that people need to pay their fair share.

Big difference in that and a standard 1040-EZ with just one W-2 that can be filled out in 15-20mins.

That's why I smh at Bernie Sanders and his bullshiit about "tax breaks for the rich." No.... there are tax breaks for everybody - you just have to take advantage of them. For instance, I know a guy who plays in the symphony - and he teaches music lessons in his house. And because of that he's able to write off a home office, including all his utilities each year. Got this ultimate sound system with recording equipment too - and he wrote it all off. Perfectly legal too.

I wish we could elect what our tax money gets allocated to. I don't mind paying taxes, but no more bribing countries to let us engage in money laundering.

I would actually get a refund if the SALT limit wasnโt $10k
A plus about living in Oregon though is they refund the tax surplus, weโre getting back 44% of taxes paid in 2022 this year

putting more in your 401k would lower your taxable income.
but in general if the above things are true you should be withholding 2k more.

But if you don't want to go that route, then get creative and start a side business and start an LLC. I used to date a woman who was a cake decorator on the side and she wrote off all her kitchen tools.

In a way they are right, but tax code is manipulated to incentivize certain behaviors like taking out massive loans and having lots of kids and installing chitty vinyl windows.

Where the hell do you think these hundreds of billions to Ukraine is coming from? The hundreds of millions to feed, house, and provide illegals with healthcare? That comes from our taxes bro. And I don't know about you, but personally I want to minimize every single penny of it that I can.
