The Spanish Flu got that name because the outbreak happened during WW1. Allied/Central forces didn't want to report the number of people affected by the disease because it would show weakness during war. Spain wasn't involved in the war so could report the actual numbers without worrying about propaganda fall out. As a result, it was called the Spanish flu because Spain appeared to be the one most affected when really the entire world was feeling it. Also, I believe it is still debatable where that virus actually came from.

China went on a propaganda blitz when it became obvious they unintentionally (or intentionally) released a man made virus to the world.

going by that logic shouldn't we call this the american flu? pretty sure we had the most reported deaths.
