the guys in their late 40s and 50s are still fun to watch perform. if jadakiss puts something out, it'll be good. that generation was the best.

It started to go downhill fast in the 2nd half of the 90s

It really only had a great run during the late 80s- mid 90s

Not dead. Actually I’m of the mind that Hip Hop is better today than 10 years ago. I know the worst of it is worse than it’s ever been, like those mumble mouthed junkie rappers, the untalented drill rappers like Fivio Foreign and industry plants like Ice Spice.

However there has been a semi-resurgence of the real chit into the mainstream. Don’t get me wrong, the trash is still more popular, but lyrics and raw production are back like vinyl is back. It’s measurable even in newer artists. You see that with the success of Benny The Butcher, Conway, Action Bronson, Freddie Gibbs, RTJ, and the continued success of J. Cole. Tracks produced by Alchemist, Hit Boy and even DJ Premier have charted in the last few years. Nas and Killer Mike won Grammys recently.

10-15 years ago Hip Hop was really watered down. The crunk era was still polluting the artistry, even rappers who are capable of putting out quality music were chasing hits, dumbing down their records and rapping over party beats.

There will never be another golden era. That is untouchable, but it makes me sleep better at night knowing the old heads are holding it down for the culture and enjoying a modicum of success/appreciation (ded fkin srs).

I love all the rappers you listed, but rap's dead as a fuking doornail. Literally every dude you mentioned is middle aged. They're all throwbacks to an earlier era.

I think the descent started in ~2012-2013 with the rise of mumble-rap ushered in with Migos (who ironically I really liked their earlier stuff).
