Dog Owners - Question

Need to save money.
Cost of household food is exploding.

Has anyone tried going without dog tick/heartworm/flea treatment before?
That stuff is expensive.

I saved on dog tick medication by adopting multiple possums. They are a natural predator to ticks.

Yes.

I only use Frontline when tick season is particularly nasty, and even then I only use a fraction of what the dosage calls for. I buy the x-large dog packs and then just fill a syringe when I administer it, since it has a cheaper unit cost.

You shouldn't have fleas. Fleas live in your carpet and in the sand around your house. They just feed on your dog. You can spray a inhibitive growth restrictor to break the growth cycle and stop them from reproducing. The IGR will last at least 6 months. They sell a can spray for your carpet and a concentrate in a sprayer for your yard.

I'm pretty vigilant about checking them for ticks after we walk in the woods. Ticks will usually travel to the top of their heads where you can see them for a few minutes before they wander back down to find a permanent spot on the body. I just pick them off and toss them into my neighbor's yard.

I don't give my dogs heartworm treatments, but I have a doggie door, so my dogs are never locked outside and mosquitoes aren't anymore of a problem for them than they are for me.

Maybe I'm lucky but my dog never needed any of that; treat costs went way up though so I wait on sales for that. Ham bones went from $3 to $9.

I've only ever bought flea treatment when I thought my dog had fleas. Also, don't buy the hella expensive pill bullchit.

I live in the north so I only gave my dog heartworm meds during the summer. From what I've read it needs to be around 95 or higher at night 3 or so nights in a row for heartworms to infect your dog. This was years ago so prob not accurate on the exact temp but I had my dog tested every year at his physical and he never had heartworms. Heartworm is much more prevalent in the south from what I've read.

For flea/tick meds you can do what 401Delta said. That's how they did it at the rescue. Buy the XL dog packs and put it in a pill container or something similar. Figure out what the dose should be by your dogs weight and use that amount. I only did flea and tick during the summers. I'm sure there were some summers I didn't even use it and never had an issue. The last couple years of my dogs life I got the 3 month kind they take by mouth. Made it so simple.

We got 2 boxers one is 6 years old one is 8 months. Never gave them heartwarming medicine or the stuff for ticks and fleas. We live in the burbs and never take em to the woods. The mosquitoes are not bad, I spray the yard with mosquitoe killer every now and then
