Elon Musk cancels talk show deal with Don Lemon on X (Twitter)

New York - Don Lemon said Wednesday that his partnership with Elon Musk went down in flames, hours after the former CNN anchor conducted an interview last week with the erratic billionaire for the debut episode of his new independent web-based show.

“Elon publicly encouraged me to join X with a new show, saying I would have his ‘full support,’” Lemon said in a statement, adding that he took Musk at his word that he was “interested in working directly with diverse voices.”

Lemon said the sit-down he conducted with Musk for the first episode of “The Don Lemon Show,” which will be released Monday on social media platforms including X and YouTube, was “respectful and wide ranging” and that “there were no restrictions on the interview that he willingly agreed to.”

“His commitment to a global town square where all questions can be asked and all ideas can be shared seems not to include questions of him from people like me,” Lemon added.

In a video posted on his Instagram page Wednesday, Lemon took further aim at Musk’s claim to be a “free speech absolutist.”

“Throughout our conversation I kept reiterating to him, although it was tense at times, I thought it was good for people to see our exchange,” Lemon said. “But apparently free speech absolutism doesn’t apply when it comes to questions about him from people like me.”

In a statement, X defended Musk’s decision to pull the plug on its agreement with Lemon.

“The Don Lemon Show is welcome to publish its content on X, without censorship, as we believe in providing a platform for creators to scale their work and connect with new communities,” the company said in a statement. “However, like any enterprise, we reserve the right to make decisions about our business partnerships, and after careful consideration, X decided not to enter into a commercial partnership with the show.”

Asked by a user on X what led to the decision, Musk attacked Lemon and CNN, which is not involved in Lemon’s new venture.

“His approach was basically just ‘CNN, but on social media’, which doesn’t work, as evidenced by the fact that CNN is dying,” Musk wrote. “And, instead of it being the real Don Lemon, it was really just [former CNN chief] Jeff Zucker talking through Don, so lacked authenticity.”

But a spokesperson for Lemon told CNN that the media personality expects Musk to honor the financial terms of the agreement.

“Don has a deal with X and expects to be paid for it,” the spokesperson said. “If we have to go to court we will.”

The deal’s implosion comes after Musk urged Lemon to launch a show on his platform, writing last year on X: “It’d be great to have [MSNBC host] Rachel Maddow, Don Lemon & others on the left put their shows on this platform. No exclusivity or legal docs required! You will receive our full support. The digital town square is for all.”

In another post, Musk directly appealed to Lemon: “Have you considered doing your show on this platform? Maybe worth a try. Audience is much bigger.”

Musk has claimed to believe in free speech absolutism, but he has repeatedly taken steps to limit the speech of critics. The billionaire has at times suspended journalists from his platform and filed lawsuits against watchdogs for publishing reports critical of X.

While Musk frequently launches ugly attacks on journalists and traditional news organizations, he has simultaneously elevated conspiracy theories and extremist rhetoric.

Last year, Musk endorsed an antisemitic conspiracy theory, which resulted in droves of advertisers fleeing X. Only then, days afterward, did Musk publicly express remorse for his actions.

Lemon was ousted from CNN last year, in a decision that the longtime anchor said left him “stunned.” No specific reason was given by CNN for Lemon’s dismissal, but it came after he was widely criticized for making sexist comments about then-GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley. Lemon apologized for the remarks at the time, saying, “When I make a mistake, I own it. And I own this one as well.”

This story has been updated with statements posted on X and additional context.

^^You called it. Lemon went straight to hate speech, Great Replacement Theory and how it relates to jewish people, and how illegals would turn the U.S. into a one party state.

Here is the Don Lemon segment:

I imagine he wanted an opposing view since he has Tucker doing his shows on X. Elon actually pitched Don Lemon last year (May 10, 2023) when he got booted from CNN. Maybe at that time he wanted something to keep the lefties on board, as they were fleeing to Mastodon and FB Threads app. Not sure how that all worked out though, I imagine all those lefties are still on twitter.

Not a winning strategy to copy CNN. they are doing quite poorly. I can understand why Musk wouldn't want to be involved in something like that.

and when musk realized Lemon had not evolved from his CNN past he realized he was not worth investing in.
but he is free to still post on the platform.

Lemon totally tanked his job interview.

This is crazy if true.

Don Lemon demanded the sun, the moon and the stars from the SpaceX boss – before being unceremoniously dumped this week, The Post has learned.

The ex-CNN anchor sent over an astronomical wish list to Elon Musk during contract talks to host a show on the billionaire’s social media platform X – including a free Tesla Cybertruck, a $5 million upfront payment on top of an $8 million salary, an equity stake in the multibillion-dollar company, and the right to approve any changes in X policy as it relates to news content, according to a document reviewed by The Post.

Lemon — who was expected to air an interview with Musk for next week’s debut episode on X — had also demanded a private jet flight to Las Vegas, a suite for him and his fiance, and that the company pay for their day drinking and massages, a source with knowledge of the situation said.

Musk agreed to do the interview with Lemon despite the fact that he was aware of some of Lemon’s outlandish demands, sources told The Post.

The proposal reviewed by The Post was sent from Lemon’s agents at United Talent Agency to X’s leadership in December.

The partnership was announced in January, but an X spokesperson told The Post that the company “did not have a final or signed agreement with Don Lemon or ‘The Don Lemon Show'” before Musk sat down for the explosive interview last week.

X declined to comment on the details of the document.

Jay Sures, vice chairman at UTA, told The Post: “This is absolute, complete utter nonsense without an iota of truth to it.”

Lemon was fired hours after the one-on-one sit-down, with Musk calling the anchor “dull” and “underwhelming.”

The one-and-half hour grilling included testy exchanges about Musk’s political leanings, his past drug use and the site’s content moderation policy. It is scheduled to run on YouTube next week.

Lemon claimed on Wednesday that he was jettisoned by X because Musk reneged on his “free speech” pledge.

Lemon’s discussions with the company began shortly after he was fired by CNN last April after a series of high-profile incidents, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

In an interview with veteran tech journalist Kara Swisher on Friday, Lemon claimed they held discussions over the summer in which the company threatened to fire him if he did not attend the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas.

CES, which was held earlier this year between Jan. 7 and 10, is one of the most highly anticipated events on the tech calendar as companies including X flock to the show in order to schmooze advertisers.

A spokesperson for X called Lemon’s claim “a disingenuous lie.”

Lemon wanted to be flown to the convention with his longtime fiance on a private jet and be put up in a private suite, as well as for X to foot the bill for alcoholic beverages and massages that he and his fiance ordered during their stay at the Vdara, the MGM-run resort on the Las Vegas Strip, according to people familiar with the matter.

The negotiations progressed after Musk brought former NBCUniversal advertising executive Linda Yaccarino on board as chief executive officer of X, sources said.

But the talks stalled over Lemon’s extensive demands, which included executive assistants as well as a marketing budget that ranged from $10 million to $15 million, people with knowledge of the situation told The Post.

A spokesperson for Lemon told The Post: “There is nothing in your list of demands that you claim Don made of X that is true. Literally nothing.”

Who is this guy?

So Elon suggests he take his show onto X (greater userbase), and then this guy asks Elon for an interview. Elon indulges, the guy tries to troll him or make him feel 'accountable' for providing a 'free speech platform', and then tells him that the 'contract' is over.

Sure, a contract involving exclusivity/financial etc., jfl at the list of conditions that the guy asked Elon for.

Reeks of a publicity stunt to me. Never heard of this dipchit before srs. Elon mogged him, plain and simple.

Don Lemon was a host on CNN for almost a decade. Even though they are denying it, I tend to believe the list of demands because Hollywood agents are known to make some obscene demands on behalf of their clients. Dude wanted equity and right to approve X policy? I mean, talk about being completely delusional and not understanding your leverage, or lack thereof, which becomes even more apparent when you see the way he treated Musk in the interview. It's like who do these people think they are?

I stopped watching CNN a long time ago, so go figure. And JFL at the requests, honestly. "Don't you worry you'll get in trouble...".

At the end of the day, he can still grow his platform on X like any other user. Period.

Yeah I stopped watching years ago, just keep up through twitter clips, etc.

These liberal journalists really do have a God-like complex and think they are the gatekeepers of speech.

At the end of the CNN segment I posted above, Lemon says, "The type of discourse we're having in the country right now, and he supposedly says that this is a public square for all, maybe what we're learning is that a public square should not be privately owned by someone who doesn't think that there should be any moderation on that platform."

All they want to do is censor people and control the narrative. That's why his contract demands included the right to approve any changes in X policy as it relates to news content.

Don Lemon released the full interview with Elon Musk. I'll skim through it later tonight.

But, Elon absolutely eviscerates Don Lemon in this clip on illegal immigration:

I saw a bit of the interview. It was Lemon just being the same character he was on CNN. He seems to have the same shackles he had on CNN even though he's free.
