Because it last came by in 1986 and most people didn't have equipment to record it. I'm sure there is news footage, probably still in their archives.
I was still young, but my Dad and I drove out to a less lit area to see it (most likely only chance for him because of his age). Ended up having cloud cover and not really seeing it well. Tried another night and was successful. Not sure if we owned a video camera yet, but they were still large at that time and it would not have even been able to film something well at night (technology has improved so much).
