Misc help me decide the next steps of my career and what to do please [srs] [reps]

LONG READ BUT I REP UNTIL MISC DIES

27 next month. UK + EU passport holder. I speak Bulgarian and English fluently.

Next month I will know if I win US green card - although chances are just above 2% because I am applying through the lottery.

BSc Comp Sci UK university and currently working at the intersection of software dev of trading platform alongside onboarding some quant trading models (integration) for one of the American investment banks in London.

Won offers from 2 very good UK medical schools (top 10 global rankings) 2 months ago for a fast track medical degree which is 4 years. The Bulgarian GOV is subsidising me partially as well.

Got a call from one of the MBB consulting firms with a London presence today that I am have passed the 5th interview and going on the 6th final round. This is for strategy consulting.

---

Reasoning: Got tired of this ****, wanna see if I can fare well in something else. One other alternative other is Product Manager in Tech or whatever. But that is internal whereas consulting gives you access to more variety and more industries. Easier to switch.

Doctor is a complete 180 but it is a standardised career.

Issue is doctor career in the UK is a bit subpar than comparable socialised Western standard, and obviously inferior to US model. There is access to private market, especially for elite school graduates, but it is a long haul for sure.

I can try migrating to the USA or Australia/Canada but getting a good location + good further training is going to be tough. Although the university is well known.

Migration to other countries is limited, given the fact the you have to posses a strong command of the local language + heavily regulated/license-cornered profession - I have heard some stuff in English-speaking private clinics but you probably do not want to hedge your bets on it. The above countries obviously are not a problem and AUS has some Commonwealth standardisation that is a synergy to the UK.

Another point of concern is the fact that I want to try living else other than the UK is a driving factor on its own, and it seems I am framing the doctor thing "can do the degree but in hopes of not practicing in the UK" lol.

Migration with my current career characteristics is also hard I think. Very difficult to apply directly, unless I invest in an Aussie or USA masters or MBA. MBB potential offer might help and try to put myself somewhere. Although I work in one of the big 3 US banks and internal transfer is still hard (visa sponsorship). Whereas doctor is more of a shortage occupation but the regulation etc.

For example, I can go and find a job in Germany because of work authorisation via the EU but language gives me a disadvantage and countries like Germany do not offer anything above the UK.

No but when my father was young he trained at a camp with Ivan Abadjiev - the guy behind The Bulgarian Method for Powerlifting and Olympic lifting.

He blew out his shoulder so he didn't meet the bar to join his club by far... But he used to tell me that Ivan was a mogger

Can you provide more info? Are you saying Canadian medical students do not find places to train at? That cant be the case.

Holes in the healthcare system, if there are any, are filled with foreign medical grads. I would not come to flip burgers hoping to land a private equity job in Toronto as a diploma-mill grad of some **** used to gain entry in the country. Repped with the University name btw.

Fun fact about him: He used to be in the military medical school route but something happened he got into a fight or something with some other bloke who was much more connected to the Bulgarian Communist Party and they forced him out.

So he continued just training and winning medals and coaching.

His methodology is mostly around priming the nervous system to power/Olympic-lifting movements through brutal frequency (obviously powered by that dere genetics and that dere).

Medicine should be a vocation, not a career. If it wasn't your first choice, (which it wasn't) stay away from it.

If it's 2 out of the top 10, there are 4, oxford, cambridge, imperial and UCL. It can't bebothoxford and cambridge, because they are prissy and disqualify you if you apply to the other one.

I have degrees from both imperial and UCL. I would recommend either of them over either of the oxbridge unis, but I still wouldn't recommend you doing medicine.

On the topic of career, my general thought is to stop thinking in terms of future planning. I'm a long term planner by nature but that's not suitable for the house of cards environment that we live in which could fall down at any moment. My 2 cents is to take whatever path gives you money immediately rather than a path that has promises of future earning potential.
Agree on the BG program. They were mostly elite people grinding themselves to the bone.

IDK about the career thing. Your career and mine are a house of cards right now as well.

This is nice, thanks but it doesn't take into account the special use case of plugging yourself in after doing med elsewhere.

Yes it can and I repped you with some more specific info on why which is irrelevant to the thread.

But sticking to the thread. What do you do?

Outside top finance careers, I literally do not understand what is the high standard of living in the UK. USA is superior grade in every single aspect. Dead srs.

Canada has very few medical schools, there is more competition to get in, to graduate and land residencies, etc. It's actually more competitive than most US Ivy medical schools.
Yes, once they graduate they will all find jobs because there is a shortage of doctors. But, you will either have to train here or pass the USMLE exams to get your license to practice.
Then the question is also do you really want to practice here unless you're some sort of specialist because family medicine = less pay, more burnouts, according to local news family doctors are quitting or opting to pursue studies to become specialists because of pay.

You have to decide what you want and why you are doing it. Itsoundslike you want money. If that's the case, I would go the consulting route, for two main reasons:

1) you will have targets every year and as long as those targets are met you will get promoted (analyst1, analyst2, consultant1, consultant2, consultant3, senior consultant1, senior consultant2, manager1, manager2, senior manager through to associate partner or partner gets less well defined).
As long as you have a skillset that means your utilisation is 80%+, the promotions are down toyou(until senior manager level) as they can charge more for you when you get promoted, so there is nothing to hold you back.

2) if you have the talent and the balls, consultancy is the perfect area to do your own startup after getting to know the industry and building a reputation.Thatis when you make real money.

I am admittedly biased, as I have spent my entire post graduation life in the consulting world.

Exams interviews all fine given that you have to prove your worth. The point is medical grads get work but there are shortages still.

I never painted Canada in a good colour btw. I just mentioned it because Canada-Aus-UK relationship is different.

If they are filling a spot for a whatever with a foreigner and 3 dudes come - one is a top UK degree, other is a random Indian university, and one top US. The top US will be top choice but he doesnt exist because who would ditch the USA for Canada lmao. So...

Feels good Mayne
Two points:

1. Not completely true. There are many US banks in SGP, one guy who came to London office (US brah from NYC) and works with me in the top 3 US banks (by investment banking and trading volume) - he came for fun in London.

Now he is trying to move to Singapore and immigration is subject to host country laws don't forget that. Some industries naturally cater to this better though like Civil Engineering moving to location of massive gov funded projects.

2. If you have an American degree, it still depends what it is and its name.

Also sacrosanct is a very strong word. Top degrees global rankings put up Chinese one, HK, Singaporean, Korean

If you are born and raised in one of the greatest countries (in a lot of aspects I must admit) and you are not a top tier university, degree title and you did accounting in Florida State and now then a CPA... this is worse than being a farmer in Chile.

Then the time is to adopt one aspect of Japanese culture - die with dignity with a single gunshot wound to the head through the mouth cavity.

Couple of observations:

1) don’t be afraid to switch careers. I have had 3 distinct careers, 2 of which required separate undergrad degrees and professional years

2) try to find a career that comes easy to you and a job that’s not too demanding.

3) from what I understand depending on the type of doctor there are a lot of overheads including insurance and equipment/ rooms. Different countries may vary depending on their healthcare systems and whether you are in private or public practice.

4) think carefully about what financial return you will realistically generate based on any particular qualification you pursue, especially if you can’t find an employer to pay your costs of education

5) whatever you do, ultimately remember the amount of money you can earn from your labour is subject to a hard limit in terms of how many hours you have in a day. Make a plan to transition to earning money from capital.
