NY County to Require COVID "Essential Worker" Permit for New Winter Storm Travel Bans

The COVID lockdowns gave politicians and government bureaucrats all kinds of swell ideas. They are loving all these apparent new powers in the post-COVID toolbox like a kid at Christmas.

Bottom line: More random control over your life by faceless retards who could not give a fuk about you, but love control. They need to be slapped down QUICK and HARD.

NEWS New York County to Enforce Travel Bans for Weather and Other ‘Catastrophes’

Locals must now apply for “essential worker” status to obtain movement passes in the event of a state of emergency.

This article originally appeared on The Dossier and was republished with permission.

Guest post by Jordan Schachtel

There has yet to be a reckoning for all of the government tyranny we witnessed since 2020, leaving power hungry politicians under the impression that they can go back to the Covid era rights restricting toolbox whenever they deem it necessary.

Under the “leadership” of Erie County, New York county executive Mark C. Poloncarz, the Buffalo area county has announced a portal for applying for “essential worker” status in the event of a state of emergency.

“The travel exemption portal will define specific categories of workers using a tiered concept to identify who would be exempt from a travel ban in order to commute to and from their place of employment. The list of essential employees will be reviewed annually and employers will be asked to provide updates when an essential employee’s work status changes for any reason that warrants removal from the exemption list,” the news release said.

The Dossier spent lots of time Friday searching to see if such measures were even legal, hoping to find inquiries in the news media defending New Yorkers from potential rights violations. Unfortunately, we came up empty. In fact, all we found from the corporate media were questions challenging the legal status of businesses that wanted to remain open during a declared emergency.

Poloncarz has used his police powers as county executive to declare a “driving ban” in the event of a snowstorm.

The driving bans were put in place at the end of 2022, after a major snowstorm wreaked havoc on the area and resulted in the deaths of stranded motorists. Poloncarz then took the opportunity to announce the new policy as a way to “do something” about the crisis at hand.

Now, one year later, they are dramatically expanding that power with the help of both state and federal resources.

“Under the New York Public Officers Law, no one may travel except personnel deemed essential during the emergency,” he declared Friday on X/Twitter, promising to sic law enforcement on those caught driving without a movement pass.

But he also made it clear that it’s not just snowstorms that he can use to justify curtailing the rights of Erie County residents. In his thread, Poloncarz decided that essential worker status applies to a travel ban related to “some other type of catastrophe” as well.

Absolutely seething that firefighters, heating repairmen, and doctors could be allowed to use a road that is otherwise closed during a snowstorm. What is happening to this country.

Surely all of their "migrants" also need to deal with such regulations. Surely.

That's an awful lot of time and bureaucracy to waste when there's a much simpler solution: If someone gets in an accident on crappy roads, and they don't have a valid reason to be out there...theyfoot the bill for all emergency services response costs.

Which part of the bureaucracy will decide if the road is crappy and what is or isn’t a valid reason for using it?

I think this is the part people see a problem with:

This leaves the door open for the bureaucracy to declare "some other type of catastrophe" on a whim - a slippery slope if you will.

An announced state of emergency addresses the first question, no new bureaucracy needed, it already happens.
A quick check of why someone was traveling during such a condition doesn't require keeping a database on a large chunk of the county.

That “quick check” sounds like what they are trying to accomplish by providing exemptions in advance.

Otherwise it would involve issuing tickets and verifying exemptions later, likely in front of a judge.

There are definitely other types of emergencies besides winter storms to consider when managing public works.

If government abuses their authority to declare emergencies then none of this really matters. They can simply declare the exemptions invalid or anything else they want.

Most people had no idea how much power the government had until Covid came along. That power is still there too.

It just makes it easier to abuse said power is what my point is.

Maybe, I’m just saying it’s already easy, and can’t get much easier.

And maybe, instead of just closing roads completely, or allowing a free for all that gets sorted out later, there is a reasonable middle ground solution to keep most traffic off the roads so they can be cleared while still allowing essential workers like doctors and hair stylists to get to work.

The government already has enough power during a snow emergency. State and local police can close entire roads and tow cars that are parked in the way of emergency workers. Travel bans are Soviet style communism. We don't do travel bans in America. Next come travel bans for hot weather "climate change." Especially handy if people are protesting their banks failing and they tell you FDIC is gone.

Seems like bureaucracy created just to add some extra government jobs in a schithole area. There's nothing left in Buffalo, every third person there works for a form of government, or had a long term govt job in the past. Surely this will 'require' 1000 more permanent jobs as people move away in droves, like they have for decades.
