A Teacher Did All He Could to Keep Kids Off Phones. He’s Quitting in Frustration.
Mitchell Rutherford faced a crisis of confidence as smartphones took over his Arizona classroom and students lost the motivation to learn
Mitchell Rutherford has taught biology at a public high school for 11 years. He’s quitting after this semester because he’s tired of trying to engage students who are lost in their phones.
Schools are losing teachers for a variety of reasons, and phones factor into decisions to leave. Dozens of teachers have told me they spend more time policing kids’ phone use than they do teaching. For Rutherford—a 35-year-old teacher who once embraced technology—seeing kids checked out and, in his view, addicted, robbed him of the joy of teaching.

it's over for the real world.

Like 55% of American school children are blacks and hispanics.
Its like a third world nation in most American public schools.

Great example to give as a teacher but at the same time if he has no backing what's he going to do.

parents fooked up when they started giving kids phones at younger and younger ages so they "wouldn't get left behind the technology curve" and "so if they're in danger they can call me" and so "they'll shut up and i can have peace and quiet with a free babysitter".
now you got people giving their 4-5 yr old their own phone. disgusting.

I guess if you can't beat them, join them.
-Use cell phones as part of a lesson plan (maybe use it for research or QR codes where kids have to participate in polls, do lesson-specific surveys etc)
-Independent study time (students can listen to music on cellphones as long as they don't talk and of course, they must be doing their work)
-Maybe teachers can have a pocket holder where kids can put their cellphones in it and get additional points on their tests/quizzes.
