True. I can’t justify spending 10k on a watch until my net worth is at least a couple mil

Nah you don't really need that much. It's not like you buy a 10k watch and then your money is gone. The money is in the watch. It may even gain value if you bought correctly

Valid point. I would also be worried about damaging the watch and/or getting robbed. I assume most people probably have insurance on watches of that value, though.

What kind of watches do you own, brah?

I'm not a huge collector, but I've got the bond Seamaster and a Grand Seiko. Then a few other plastic Casios for the gym etc

But for cheaper watches, you're better off with quartz which will just run and you don't want to worry about it.

Secondly, if you're going to spend $200, I feel like you could have spent $50 or even $20 and no one would be able to tell the difference.

Thirdly, Brad still hasn't paid blue hawk his $200.
Im pretty sure orient and some seikos punch above their weight for the value

Either that or some other ones are egregiously expensive..

As far as functioning, i think theyre good watches.. they just dont have the social status of a rolex

Hell, most people probably wouldnt even know audemars piguet and patek phillipe are more expensive and higher status than rolex

Look at the audemar piguet royal oak and then casios version (which is actually tougher)

You do you, OP, but I never understood some dudes' fascination with watches. I work in finance and have been around too many hardos who think they're hot chit just because they own a Rolex that literally has 0 functionality beyond telling me its 945. They also spent multiple months of rent for said bragging rights...

But it's 2024, there's no need for a watch to tell time. It's purely a jewelry/fashion item at this point. IMO, either spend as little as possible or go high end, the middle seems like a waste.
I understand your point.. but everything were talking is probably "middle ground". Thats the irony

The extreme end is probably realllll extreme and i would think nobody would wear it as its multi-millions and wearing it would damage it

But peep the rolex submariner and then the seiko 5 submariner

And tell me which one youd rather wear regularly: one for 300 bucks or one for 12,000

They literally look exactly the same but you wouldnt have to worry about bumping into a corner with the 300 dollar one

yeah the watch market is weird. The entire fashion industry actually. Compare a watch that goes for half a million with a car that goes for half a million and explain to me where the engineering/r&d/materials justify the watch.

I see your point, but you could say that about pretty much anything. Why buy a bmw/mercedes when you could buy a Camry or a Lamborghini?

I’m not very knowledgeable about watches. However, this watch is highly recommended for the price point and I love how it looks, so I have no problem paying $200. I’ve never owned a mechanical watch before, but it’ll be nice not having to replace batteries.

Meh. I've got 6.5" wrists and a 44mm Sami looks fine. Wouldn't want to go any bigger though.

I get it to some extent in that it's one of the few pieces of "jewelry" that's acceptable for men to wear. I just don't get what incremental benefit you get from a Rolex or Omega that's $10-15K over a good-looking watch that looks dressy/classy but is, say, $500-$1000. The later is affordable for any bloke that's a middle manager in corporat eamerica and gives you the same function, minus the branding.

If a Rolex were $3K, then it at least makes sense in that a Gucci t-shirt will cost more than an H&M t-shirt despite more or less looking the same. The price differential here, even after adjusting for branding, makes absolutely ZERO sense though to me and that's where I never got it. A Rolex watch will tell me its 945 on July 21st just like a cheaper watch. This isn't a lamborghini vs 3 series where a Lambo is way more advanced and faster, so the price differential (while excessive) could be justified to enthusiasts...

His watch is a generally well known bang for buck watch. “Rolex” is just a company name, and the model, year, condition, etc., matter more than the name in most cases. This hits the area where uninformed people view branding as more important than the product. Plenty of Rolexes are crap investments, and some are no brainer great purchases at msrp. But, you know, you have to learn about the things you are buying to tell the difference.

It was from the orient store on Amazon, so it’s definitely legit

But agreed if you’re getting it from a different seller

Nothing wrong with Orient watches, generally good value. I also own the original Triton. Gethin Christian on YouTube does some interesting and honest reviews on them.

A $20 timex will keep better time too. Automatics are less accurate than quartz.
