This must be a running gag over there at apple.

How tf do you sell a pro range device that only has 8GB of ram? That's not pro.. Good thing they have the new macbook air range though.

Keep in mind that's shared memory between cpu and gpu.

You need 24gb MINIMUM on a mac to meet the 8/16 split on PC.

To be fair, the MacOS is quite well optimised and even my 8GB macbook pro from years back works perfectly well. It's just that it's a pro machiine, it shouldn't come with 8gb of ram, only 16 and up.

Yeah, it's different from windows based PC's.

Like how nintendo switch only has 4gb but a steam deck has 16gb

Arch linux is really well optimized too. I barely go over 10gb of sys ram. OS itself with KDE runs at ~2.6 with nothing open.

Still have 32 though.

IMO an 8gb ram Macbook air still beats a 64 gb ram Windows laptop for most things. Yeah apple is cheap in one sense, they could put in 16gb base at least, but they have a point, you don't necessarily need all that extra ram.

Macbooks are the top of the computing foodchain. Linux devices are close, but they don't have a trillion dollar company to optimize the OS like Apple does. You want an elite computing experience, you gotta pay.

it's unix based but i'd have to see how much ram is free post boot.
there are linux distro's the use less than 2gb at boot up. but once you fire up a few productivity apps you are using swap on the SSD and you notice it.
Apple pc's have been over priced for as long as i remember for what they actually give you hardware wise.

no. an 8gb mac does not out perform a similiar cpu windows pc with 64 gigs of ram.
it doesn't even out perform a 16gb pc.
once you start opening tabs in the browser, fire up photo editing or desktop publishing you will see there is a significant difference because it is handicapped.
optimize all you want photo shop still uses X amount of ram regardless of the OS and if you don't have the ram it's using the hard drive as swap.
an SSD is not faster than system ram.

if you are buying it to do email and internet and maybe word processing ok.
but you are not using 8gb of ram to do any real work no matter what OS or processor you have.
i'm no windows fanboi because it's full of bloatware but let's be realistic here,
8GB is enough for grandma to watch kitten videos on ******** and send emails and that's really about it.
which is fine i guess.
8GB was so 5 yrs ago.
16gb should be minimum these days.

A lot of people underestimate software. It can make or break hardware - especially how fast your PC/laptop runs...

Optimisations, design all play a role. And Apple makes their own chips now in their phones and laptops... probably really catered to their OS as they have control over what is going on under the hood.

I do not use Apple, apart from iPhone SE 2022, which I bought purely out of frustration with the lack of choices of smaller-sized in the Android world. Legit can't carry a brick in my pocket.

The iPhone SE has the same chip as the iPhone 15, but in an iPhone 8 body (srs) - so very small and therefore holds a much smaller battery.

Yet, compared to my previous mid-range Samsung Galaxy A54, which has a much larger battery, it has more percentage at the end of each day than the Galaxy.

There is a reason why Chinese Androids, that on paper have better specs than iPhones (or Samsungs, Pixels etc), but for half the price are barely usable 2 years after purchase.

Nah Apple has great marketing and their materials and designs are good.

Sure, the laptops are more expensive but people will value it more than some crappy $500 Microshaft product. They'll end up keeping the apple laptop longer so in a way that's a good thing. I have an Ipad from 2016 that still works like a beast.

Microshaft or other laptop brands wished they can charge the same amount of money for a laptop lol. No, what they'll use the cheapest stuff, with chit design, and for a low dollar amount(the lower the amount the less people will value it). So it might be functional completely, but the product/brand still needs to tug people to see it a certain way.

Yeah agreed - I have iPhones in my cupboard from 2018 that still function fine. My macbook pro from that time period works perfectly as well, especially after I changed the battery.

It's apparent when you even open an apple product and see how clean everything looks inside that care was put into designing it.

Apple laptops are so much better than windows laptop in terms of aesthetics and usability.

And at the price point of $800-$4000k for their products, it falls into a category where a lot of people can "afford" the best tech available. I think most people would just rather pay more to have all the bells and whistle at that price point. Whereas if you compare it to a Porsche or Lamborghini its simply out of reach - where they can't just work harder or save a few paychecks to purchase.
