Anything better than having a sleepover with your buddies & running up to Blockbuster to pick up a video game and a few movies? Then staying up all night having a blast?

Today's skidmarks will never know the joys of all that. They just stare at their phones all day. Watching trannies on Youtube.

Yes and no. Best thing about that era was how rentals made stuff more of an event. Like with Steaming you got instant access to countless chit, but back then you had to commit yourself to just one or two things and it was an event to watch it.

I mostly missed out on those years because I was in and out of jail and rarely had a place. One summer in 1999 I had an apartment, a television, and a VCR. I rented Easy rider and some horror flicks.

I miss when grocery stores had video rental sections in them. Every Friday my family and I would go down there and after getting groceries for the week We'd rent some movies for the weekend. My brother and I would just about always pick out either video games or a pro wrestling tape. It was something I always looked forward to throughout the week. Netflix just ain't the same.

I miss the mail in version of netflix that had a huge catalog, you would pay by how many DVD's you got at a time, mailed back whenever....

the selection and quality was vastly superior to today's streaming platforms.

I would do BMG and columbia house CD's and LP's if it was still in business also...

physical media is just so much more enjoyable.

Yeah, Netflix is really not that good for older movies especially sequels.

yup
Things happen with movie rights all the time and it will only get worse

common example is Dogma
Rights issues

Dogma is unavailable to stream or purchase digitally due to the film's rights being owned personally by Bob and Harvey Weinstein in a deal that predates streaming.[21] In early 2020, after he was convicted and sentenced to 23 years incarceration for rape, Harvey Weinstein was reportedly having financial difficulties; purportedly necessitating liquidation of some of his assets (to go towards financing his appeal).

On May 15, 2020, Harvey reached out to his brother and former partner, Bob Weinstein, for the first time since the two had become estranged (over a year ago). Relayed over text message, Harvey asked Bob if he would

“…seriously consider buying the rights to Dogma from him, and to patch up your relationship with Kevin Smith. I would like to get $3M - $3.5 million for the film, but feel it could easily bring over $5 million in global rights, Netflix, AT&T, etc.”
— Harvey Weinstein, to, Bob Weinstein

Bob Weinstein told author, Ken Auletta, that he considered his older brother's proffer: just another "Harvey con;" Bob continued, "Harvey proposed that if we re-released [Dogma] for streaming it would be worth five million dollars. The truth is, it is probably worth closer to $50,000, if that. He was completely lying. He said that he would like me to give him three and a half million towards the fictitious five million that this picture was worth. The only thing Harvey cared about was trying to convince me to give him three and a half million dollars. I did not respond to his request." Harvey denies contacting his brother (from prison).[22]

In 2022, instead of the release of Clerks III, Kevin Smith talked about trying to buy back the rights to Dogma from the Weinsteins. He claimed that both of his offers were "scoffed at" and added that "my movie about angels is owned by the devil himself."[23][24]

In June 2024, at a Smodcastle Theater screening of Clerks: The Animated Series, Kevin Smith announced that he had finally purchased Dogma from Weinstein. No details on a re-release were give, but Smith followed the claim saying he has written Dogma 2 and it will star Justin Bieber and Ralph Garman.[25] In his reply to a comment left on an Instagram post of his, Brian O'Halloran stated that the rights were sold to Paramount Pictures.[26]

Yes, the video rental store I would go to had everything. There was the movie section, video game section, a new stand with comic books and magazines, an apparel section, toy section, books, snacks, and other merch. Amazing feeling going there on a Friday or Saturday night and finding the film you've been wanting to watch for a while. Miss it.

Yeah, what stores did you have near you? 'Phar-Mor' here used to rent out videos & games. 'Roses' did as well. The one closest to me was actually still renting out VHS vids as recently as probably 2013 or so. And I believe 'Hills' used rent out tapes too, right? Mom gets the groceries, you go searching the movies for a half hour, and end up settling on 'Babe 2: Pig in the City'. Good times.

The chain store I referred to in my post was called Hastings. There was even a super store in my area.
