Looking to transition careers and get into IT support.

I'm a salesman by profession, but it's not the thing for me - I don't have it in me to deal with the office politics and personalities that come along with sales, in addition to constantly lying, etc. If you know you know.

I'm looking to get into IT since I'm nerdy and like computers and don't find it boring to problem solve around hardware and software - and the people that I work with won't be as difficult to deal with as sales people.

I've already enrolled into an online course at a community college to learn the basics and have something to leverage off of.

What should I know?

idk chit about IT support but tech market is busting, ton's of grads can't find jobs etc. And There's a couple million ****** in Mumbai who would happily do your job for a fifth of the price.

The same could be said for any field IMO. Everybody these days has a degree. Still going to give it a shot though.

Tech is literally worse than 2008 right now.... massive layoffs for past 18+ months. It's literally the worst time to get into this.

Ok srs It depends on where you think you might be able to land a tech support role. If it's in a mid-to large-sized business or enterprise, Active Directory is something to be familiar with that will set you apart. You have CS grads going into the help desk that have no clue about that, and also the more practical skills of working in IT support, such as being good at troubleshooting issues. Like just being able to quickly decide if it's a hardware, software, network or the issue is something not really "IT" but since it's on a computer they think it is, like more HR or bureaucratic regulation related.

I would say that being able to pass the CompTIA A+ is more than enough "knowledge" for working in IT support. Just being able to demonstrate in interest and passion for this stuff, and that you can think logically, step by step, to work through issues from the more basic to the more advanced. So if the interviewer asks you "Someone calls you and says they can't read their emails, they want you to fix it right now, how would you respond", you are able to ask clarifying questions to try and see where the issue is (Are you connected to the internet at all, when did this start, etc). A lot of this stuff you can learn in a book, but seeing and doing it IRL is what you're probably already ready for because you're good with computers, so don't try to learn everything, because at the beginning, you'll mostly just be resetting passwords anyway. Hopefully the job will let you do more interesting stuff in due time.

Unfortunately you're still going to have to deal with people, but it's only until it's fixed. But having that background is a big plus, because a good IT support worker is good at customer service.

How much were you making per annum with sales OP?

I worked at an IT Help Desk during pursuit of my Comp Sci degree. Got some CompTIA certs, entered cyber security. I started out making $10/hr at help desk, then graduated and grossed $60k in my first cyber gig (including unpaid overtime). Fast forward 7 years and I'm WFH looking to gross about $175k-$185k this year depending on the overtime.

I thought about doing this too, years ago... then i remembered IT is ever changing, complicated and stressful.

If anything, get into project management (scrum master for example) for IT projects.

Not enough to deal with the mobbing when you hit your target and they don't - or when the whole office is gossiping about what you had for lunch.

I hear that cyber security isn't easy to get into, even though roles are plentiful..

yeah in Canada you wont get any job with COmptia certs. They imported way to many Pavjeets to do those jobs. I always see on youtube get A+ or comptia trificta and you will get a help desk job. No chance in Canada

In Canada you will need cert with 2 year computer diploma at least. And right now even ppl with those credictinals are having a hard time to get a job. Even if they do it like 50-60k.

Might as well get a normal degree.

yeah this sounds better man. Or you can get some type of MIS degree or something more business side.

I got my brother from literally zero experience, and I mean literally zero, to six figures in 2 years, 27 months to be exact, and $102k. IT is as it always is, if you have the skills, you'll always have a job.

And they do the job shyttily. I have lost count of the amount of times I've had to fix some Indian's mess. Not to say that there aren't very capable Indians, but those are Westernized Indians, not the how can she slap fob Indians.

Good salesman make more than almost any profession. No shame in saying you’re a dog chit salesman, especially if you think it involves lying. People can smell your commission breath through the phone and they see through your bs. Being honest with customers is how you build a pipeline. Enough with the cope. We need shoe shiners too

Those certs are worthless, except for that every government entity requires Sec+, but they don't teach you much. Still it's good for a general intro to IT. I would study for all 3, but don't get the certifications. If a job requires it, have them pay for it.

If I were starting over today I would do this.

That's a 6 month course and should be all you need to get on the base floor.

It’s one of those fields where it’s hard to get into but once you’re in you’re in. If you fast track through school and get the basics of A+, Net+, and Security + while networking with other students, teachers, and people in the field it should be relatively easy to get in as long as you aren’t completely autistic. And if you don’t mind starting in IT it will be really easy. Just find a decent sized company and let them know your goals of transitioning into Security and someone will take a chance with you…again assuming you aren’t a potato at interviewing and know how to make your case. One of the few good things Biden has done is pour a ton of attention and funds into cybersecurity. That party may be over by the time you’re ready to jump in though, depending on how the next few years go. But again if you don’t mind starting in basic IT it’ll be easy.

It does make sense that one would initially work in general IT before specialising in CyberSecurity. In from Aus BTW

can't help too much but kinda in the same boat lol

im a CPA but working on cybersecurity degree @ WGU. Honestly doing it partly for the GI Bill housing money lol. But it's all online and comes with a ton of certs. You'll get A+, Network+, SEC+....all those and more. Good for gov contracting.

This is what I did to get into cyber, sort of. I skipped A+ and Net+ because I took some networking classes in college and felt pretty technical. Went straight to Sec+, CySA+, CASP+. Professor Messer for Sec+, then did Jason Dion for CySA+, and self studied / online quizzes for CASP+. Next up is CISSP, then I'm probably done with certifications tbh, just gonna keep renewing the CISSP with credits after that.
