The op stats 'live well'. Last i checked, not being able to cover an emergency without having to go into debt isn't living well. 2 people making $15/hr is not living well. It's below average.

And if we're talking about starting off, well you ain't trying if you're starting off at $15. Fastfood pays that now.

a young couple that own a home, have a car, plenty of food, internet, cell phones, tv and live in america ARE living well. averages mean nothing here.

and yes, $15 isn't much...i'm simply showing even at the bare minimum of they pay scale they can easily make it. they'd probably be at $20/hr+ in short order with any effort to get ahead.

You're not getting all of that with 2 $15/hr wages bud. MAYBE in Alabama or Oklahoma. I understand you're saying to save $40,000 but it's never like that. You'll barely make it to $5k, let alone $40,000

One emergency easily wipes out your saving

Your $5000/month is also off. It's actually $4000/month

Your $5000/month figure is wrong. It's $4000/month after taxes.

The doesn't state make it, the op states live well.

No 401k
Bare minimum health insurance
No emergency fund
No investments
Transportation is either beater, bus, or bicycle.
And any savings you do have will be wiped out with one small emergency

The scenario I've outlined IS living very well...you're buying into the American dream while just starting out and working the lowest paying jobs on the ladder. This could be a 20 yr old couple without even high school degrees. ...making it...in America...putting themselves in a position to have all that.

Ok so what do they do the first time they have to get an MRI, or maybe the HVAC fails on their condo?
How does that work?

And I am not saying its not possible to live on $60k as a couiple. But its not possible to own a $200k home responsibly with that income.
Can you comprehend this?

i would think they have insurance. if the hvac fails they likely putting any savings they have towards it or possibly put what they don't have on credit and work overtime to pay it off asap. how did my parents buy a home starting out when they didn't make much over minimum wage?

Well if we say they have $2,000 tied up in housing costs/utilities. that gives them $2,000/month to make it. there may be times they feel the need to work extra hours at least until they can make more money. a few years later who know...maybe he's making $22/hr and she's making $20. now they have more breathing room.

i pay ~$8/month for cell service. if they're driving a 2012 corolla gasoline would be something like $20/week. food will be going to aldis and buying the most nutrient/calorie dense foods they afford to cook at home. people i know meal plan and have servings from one meal that last 3-5 days.

First you say "live well" in the title
Now you say "make it"

Neither is true on that wage with a 200k condo.
They might be "surviving" temporarily.....but not the other two conditions you state

Capiche?

hopefully your autism allows you to understand the nuance of "living well" for different circumstances. is a 20 yr old couple making $15/hr each living well by the standards of 50 yr old people -- of course not.

If ANYONE at ANY age is one emergency away from not making their mortgage payment......you are not "living well"
If you have to eat the same chit for 5 days straight......you are not "living well"

You are near 40 years old.....so closer to the "standards of 50 year old people"......yet in your OP you dont state an age so people would infer "your age"
You cant make up this level of non logic up.
We get it....you are broke. Stop projecting on everyone else like its ok.

You plan for emergencies -- you have lines of credit available to cover extreme circumstances and only use it when absolutely needed. I had my first credit card at age 18. You work extra hours when available and invest that money for a rainy day. A couple in the beginning stages of adulthood eating on one meal for 3-4 days -- ohhh the horror.

I swear, some people need me to hold their hand and walk them through the most basic of things.

Yeah that's called an emergency fund....not a line of credit you autist.
Yes im sure you had your first credit card at age 18....but I can guarantee you....you are not the definition of living well at age 39 that most people would define.
There is no definition in America of living well which equates to eating the same chit for 4 days. I don't care what you say.

is it getting by? Sure. Do I poo poo on that? No not at all. Props to them for doing what they have to do.
We get it. You are broke. Quit trying to justify to everyone else its ok.

In this time in the US.....it is so fricken easy to make money its not even funny. There are sooo many channels to make money....even in your sleep.

An emergency fund being whatever cash you've saved up -- a line of credit being available for anything that won't cover. Very simple concept really.

If you make a good meal what in the hell is wrong with eating it a various times over the next 4-5 days? This is a fooking bodybuilding forum you autist -- a place where people eat the most bland foods day after day for years...for pleasure...yet somehow survive.

No, technically an emergency fund is 5-6 months of expenses to float by/ That would be about $24k according to your calculation of what these people take home which is also unrealistic
Add that to the $40 down............................

Two people making $15/hr is roughly $4k a month after taxes, not 5k...

And that does not include retirement contributions and healthcare.
So its probably around 3.5k a month
Then you start with utilities and groceries, rent, etc.
