Used to go HAM when younger, but today the risk vs reward ratio is too skewed. For strength few things are better imo.

I stopped doing deadlifts with a regular bar after slipping a disk (unrelated incident). Just use the trap bar. Takes so much shear stress off your lower back and works pretty much all the same muscle groups.
