My dog (R.I.P) would have nightmares

and run in his sleep.

When he woke up would he be smart enough to know that it was not real or did he think that happened IRL?

your dog stayed with you
since you offered him food daily,
just like any person working in any corporate/firm
or wife staying with her husband.

he died, move along
or adopt another dog and feed him
and clean after he poops himself.

Sometimes when I would see one of my dogs in distress during a dream I'd wake them up and comfort them, the look on their face was priceless.
