Is USA really the best at basketball?

Looking at the Olympics, Serbia took the best from the USA to edge and has a population of 6 million people. France took USA to the edge and has a population of 68 million.

How do these teams with far less people to draw talent from hang right with the US?

NJewA is a star driven league, having a surplus of stars is crucial and creates more revenue for **** ownership around the league. Hence all the bullchit calls stars be getting.

That special treatment just doesn't completely translate to international basketball, and that makes for closer games.

In a team sport like basketball where the best are adulated everywhere egos clash.

For sports like track and field or swimming the US has deep talent. For every 1 sprinter small countries have that can run under 45 seconds in the 400 meters the US has 50-100. But spots are limited. And people have a bad day (sometimes purely psychological fuking them up) while others are having the best in their lives that same day.

Dominating at sports really has less to do with one group being better than another and more to do with the feeder system.

Look at basketball. We have a feeder system that reaches all the way back to like 6th grade kids getting nike contracts and such.

of course with that, the cream will rise to the top.

Now look at some of these small countries who dont have that system. They can be great basketball players but are never exposed to that higher level of competition that brings everyones game up.

Look to the wnba as an example. prior to caitlyn clark and this new breed of players their game was fairly stagnant. they could win championships and such but it was never going to progress with being pushed to do so.

Thats why the older players dont like her, its not because she is white or any of that stuff, its because she is challenging the status quo. bringing more game to what they thought they had already mastered.

This will only be a plus in the long run.
"To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda

with the US's feeder system, the best of the best (led by a HOF coach involved in 9 NBA championships) nearly got beat by a bunch of white guys from a country with a population of 6 million and by a country led by a 20 yr old (victor) and one other all star (gobert). it's hard to wrap the mind around. is the team game of basketball just played that badly in the US?

National teams play more frequently as a team, while the US players got together for the first time about 5-6 weeks ago and had to learn tendencies.
Steph knew what Klay Thompson would do, but he has no clue what LeBron will do.
For a team to gel, it takes longer than 6 weeks but they managed to win it anyway.

hogwash. so you are telling me jokic and bogdonovic play together more with serbia while also playing in the nba? victor, gobert and batum play together more with france as a team while also playing in the nba? this explanation makes no sense.

Talent wise, I don't think so. With all the investments, superstars and infrastructure USA has in the sport, they should have bodied everyone. Yet, they did not.

IMO mostly Balkan nations have better overall talent potential but the lack of funding and infrastructure just handicaps the whole thing.

You won't be able to understand then.

2 players on a whole squad who don't normally play with others on the national team, while US team are all sporadic.

yeah, what we witnessed is that you can take the absolute best from the US and it's no longer a given that they'll win despite a population of 350 million. imagine taking the nba olympic team from a state with similar population of serbia...they'd get crushed. a better brand of basketball is apparently played internationally.

umm...dude the best players on the serbia team play in the nba so what chemistry would they have with dudes that play on other teams in europe and elsewhere? 3 of the starters from france play in the nba along with about 3 of their best off the bench. this is a piss poor argument

Yeah. You see the same in soccer. Paraguay would mop the floor with Russia or China despite being tiny by comparison. It's just a bigger deal in Paraguay. It's prioritized more culturally at the youth level.

Also, America has a huge population but much of it is traditionally shorter ethnicities: Asians, Italians, Jews, Latins. The basketball crop mostly comes from blacks and western/central european whites like Steve Nash, Chet Homlgren, Cooper Flagg.

Meanwhile Serbians are all huge on average. So when you compare the size of each country's "basketball population" it's not as disparate.

dude there are like 50 million blacks alone in the US. serbia has a total population of 6 million.

No doubt. I grant USA is still has a much bigger talent pool, but it's not realistically the full 380 million or whatever.

Ultimately tho, a team only needs 12 guys. So any country only needs to find 12 elite basketball players and theyre gonna have a chance to be competitive with any other country if all else is equal. Any country over a million people with a tall population that values basketball will be competitive if they push the youth toward it.

if anything, in 2024 the US won gold but they were humbled in regards to the game of basketball...one of our big 3 sports. this is probably the last olympics where we go in expecting to roll over everyone even with the best talent/coaching we can muster (durant, curry and lebron will all be gone in 2028).

Thing is with basketball in the USA:

The country has the population
It has the infrastructure and funding
It is arguably the most popular sport in the country

Meanwhile Serbia:

Lacks the population, funding, and basketball isn't near the most popular sport

NBAs current best player is zero phucks given drunk Serbian dude. Good thing for the USA that almost nobody outside of the states cares about Basketball otherwise other nations would mop the floor with them if they gave half the phucks about investing in the sport.

And I srs believe this is because USA idea of sporting events is some family gatherings, basically no passion. European and especially Balkanic sporting events look like a battlefield even for the 3rd rate shyt events.

As said for all their facilities and investment in the sport the States should be way far above than being almost kicked out of the semi-finals by some former commie war-torn low-population country that doesn't care much about basketball

It came straight from Steph Curry in an interview and made perfect sense after he said it.
But i will tell him (Steph Curry) that eddiehaaskell from bb.com disagrees with his detailed expert analysis, and that he is flat out wrong.......
LMAO!

America is the best overall (currently) but most of their best players wont be around for the next Olympics, it's the end of a dominant era. Europe is the future.

Basketball is huge in Serbia, theyre tall and not very rich, everyone is trying to become a pro basketball player.

And again, you only need 12 players so population size gives you a diminishing return at some point. In soccer Germany would be the favorite to beat Iceland or Ecuador or Australia but it's close enough that on any given day those much smaller countries could upset them. Population size is a small advantage but not a significant one once youre into the millions of people.

if population size gives diminishing returns, the US should be able to field a team from south carolina that could compete for gold in the olympics, right?

yeah i think from here on out olympic gold is clearly up for grabs amoungst 5 or so countries and will just depend on who's playing their best and has less injuries.
