This year has been BRUTAL for computer programmers. I've seen people laid off that were with a company for 20+ years, yet outside of the internet you don't really ever hear about it.

That's one of the first things AI got good at was writing simple code. I told people it's going to be massive layoffs and they were like oh no it will make more jobs for AI programmers. No you retards it's a massive net loss over all

New car prices and the car notes are out of normies budgets.

Manufacturers won't budge on prices, therefore selling less cars.

Some Ford dealerships still have 2023 F150s on the lot and still won't cut the price.

I think the car market will struggle for the next 1+ year. I expect to see more layoffs from auto manufacturers going forward.

This sounds like housing too. I see a ton of listings from 2022 still on the market, at insane prices, and the sellers aren't budging.

I haven't seen the impact of AI that much personally. The two companies I worked at over the last few years were hiring Indians overseas like crazy, then this year they've just started laying people off here in the US left and right.

Kinda weird. That's not what I've observed in my neck of the woods, car prices have been going down, especially EVs as non-Tesla EVs have been sitting around and dealerships are desperate to get rid of them.


The only problem is that nobody wants an EV unless it's Tesla.

IMO it's even worse than that. Companies were so massively overhired it would blow your mind if you could see it from the inside. Companies had so many teams/people on payroll that had no benefit whatsoever. Working on a product that had no users, or a second team at the company was building the same thing etc

I think the need for custom software is also eroded. Because theres aleady existing companies that already made what you need. A company doesn't need to make it's own storefront when it can just sell on amazon, or make custom HR software when there's Workday etc

And at the same time the cost for building custom software is so high now cause it's so much more complex now than it used to be. Just having an html page isn't good enough anymore, you got to have some stupid react web app with "async thunks" that costs millions of dollars to build and maintain. And companies that are smart won't pay for it

And so many people got into CS degrees. Just look at college stats, it's often the most popular major now where it used to be one of the smallest

Tech industry may never recover from this srs

Yeah the shortage of programmers has always been a myth, even years ago. It was always an excuse to undercut American workers and bring in H1Bs. Now they don't even have to do that, they just farm the work out to Indians in India, it's even cheaper.

Really you could do this with any job that's done on a computer, but for whatever reason programming seems to be totally unregulated.

This year? The mass layoffs in tech started tail end of 22/beginning of 23.

It's been a blood bath for over 18 months.

The trend now is offshoring to Costa Rica or other Latin American countries. Eastern Europe was popular for a bit too

Offshoring to India was almost always a huge mistake but those countries aren't bad at it

Companies always need custom software. They're the ones with the capital to make new products. But I think 1000 random ITs is just not needed. Probably was a good cut.

There was also a tax code update a few years ago that made software more expensive. Before, companies could deduct R&D costs that year but now they have to deduct it over like 15 years

I'm not sure about the software bubble though, maybe other parts of IT but definitely not software. I read an article once that we're actually in a baby phase when it comes to software.

I say this because if you take a video game, like say Grand Theft Auto or a program like Adobe Photoshop, there's always more you can add to it and always things you can improve. The "art" side of the game(3d models) are almost always done but the programming side is never done that's why you continually see updates to game balancing, glitch fixing, quality of life stuff. You probably have more job security as a high level software developer than a very good artist who works for a big name studio like marvel.

Software developers are essentially tool developers. So if you take Milwaukee tools, their products is the middle of the development. They'll source the main tool makers and they just come up with the designs for the end user tools. But the main tool makers are the major players.

The only problem is that nobody wants an EV unless it's Tesla.
New car is still averaging around 45k out the door. 13k down is still around $600 a month not including insurance.

Many dealerships are offering incentives such as better rates or maybe 2-3k off if you pay in cash.

I wanted to get an F-250 Diesel but they still want 65K-100K depending on trim. Ford doesn't offer better rates through Ford finance for the Super Duty trucks. They know business owners will buy and write them off. 25K down on 65K at 84 months is still like $800 a month not including insurance lol.

Only deals I've seen are for EVs but no one wants them.

Where I worked it was mainly Indians, with some people from the Philippines sprinkled in. The Indians were mostly pretty terrible, honestly the people from the Philippines tended to be better. The company didn't seem to care though. It must have looked good on paper or something, and that's all they cared about.

This year it got REALLY bad, maybe it was on the downswing when you're saying, but I didn't notice until this year. And it's gotten progressively worse as the year's gone on. What I do is really specialized, and when I'd look at jobs on indeed there would usually be 5 or 6 applicants, maybe 10 sometimes. Now when I look everything just says 200+. I think so many people have been laid off they're just mass applying to everything now.

And again, outside of the internet I don't hear anything about this.
