Anyone never use overhead compartments when flying?

I always go with just a backpack or (if traveling with business attire) a briefcase. It’s so much easier and faster. You get to your seat, put the bag under the seat, and sit down. Same when it’s time to disembark: just grab the bag from under the seat, get up, and exit. Plus - it’s convenient during the flight. If I need to get something from my bag, I don’t have to get up and open the overhead compartment mid flight (which can be extra annoying if you don’t have an aisle seat)

People who use overhead compartments are often the reason that it takes longer to get on/off a plane: those people are running all over the place to find a compartment with space, which can be hard to find if the flight is full. Sometimes, those people have trouble lifting their carry-on luggage. And those people, if they have a middle or window seat, are the ones who’ll wake you up to get something from bag in the overhead compartment

how do they get it on? do they pay extra charges or what?

before i would get my tape measure out to make sure my little overhead is within their guidelines (double check their website to see if sh*t hasn't changed for the size allowed to be taken on the plane) - otherwise they ask me to put it in cargo (usually for free), just a ballache to have to then wait to get it and hope it hasn't been stolen or destroyed - meanwhile some mofo has taken on a pro size suitcase and got it in the overheard

do that self check in shit and try to sneak it through
its another societal example of not cooperating being rewarded. selfish behavior is rewarded in our society

If it doesn't fit in my backpack it doesn't go on the plane with me.

So you take 2 carry on bags on the plane? Most of them won’t let you on. Or are you putting the laptop bag inside the duffel bag until you get on the plane?

Yes usually one carry on, one checked and a backpack for personal item

Just realized they can force you to check your carry on if there is no room so don't put anything super valuable there

Sometimes I skip the carry on bag but usually I bring it most trips have been for a few weeks so I have a lot of stuff
