Well the geniuses at HR came up with the idea to offer us employees the option to access a Remote Desktop from home to minimize impact.

However they made it VERY clear - NOBODY will EVER be allowed to work remotely unless they activate it.

My boss even made a sarcastic comment like “this will probably never happen and who wants to bring their work home with them anyway?”

You’re right bro. It rustled me hard when I heard that comment. Most of my coworkers have never had the privilege to WFH before, so it’s like they don’t know what they’re missing. These Ministry of Truth propaganda tactics might work on them.

But I was able to do so for two years during COVID at my last job and it was the absolute happiest I’d ever been in my entire adult life. I was infinitely more productive being in total control of my environment. There’s a fundamental flaw in my personality where, when I feel stressed, I become quietly defiant. I’ll just stop putting in effort. To the contrary, when I feel empowered, I flourish. Maybe others differ.

Deep down, the bosses want the same thing I do. My direct manager who said this works from home at least once a week. The top boss at my company works from home ALL THE TIME. I only see him once or twice a month at best. He’s made similar statements about how he doesn’t like remote work because he “wants to see everyone’s smiling face when he comes in” yet this cocksucker spends weeks at a time in Florida and comes back tan as a fucking lobster shell in the middle of winter. Douche bag behavior.

The level of incompetence at this place is astounding man.

Being Anti WFH is a few reasons.

The top people are elitists that think they are special and WFH is a privilege only for them.
Politicians and corporations that want you spending money associated with commuting.
People who are jealous they can't WFH, tradies, truck drivers, police etc. (these people make it safe for the above to safely be anti-wfh without backlash)
Companies that are pissed off about their long term leases.

I’ve been open about disagreeing with the Trump administration on remote work, while still acknowledging RTO is probably a slight net positive for society when you consider what happened to our cities. People are genuinely lazy. Many of them completely collapse without constant monitoring or being given direction, which is why the lockdowns created so much divorce, alcoholism, mental illness. For me it was the opposite though. Autonomy allows me to flourish. I can only speak to my own personal strengths and dat dere INTJ personality is not cut out for this in person wagie grind mane.

WFH is a double edged sword. If you can WFH, your company can outsource your job on a global marketplace to the lowest bidder, AI or not.

Some functions need to be in office. Mine is not one of them. It's funny how I got glowing reviews during the 2 years we worked full time from home before they pulled us back in hybrid. Nothing was ever said that I wasn't doing my job well from home. They pulled people who weren't doing their jobs in as soon as the office opened back up. It just sucks that I get punished because some people don't do their jobs at home.

Half the people that do go in the office do nothing but walk around and talk all day.

My company had WFH before I got here, and every team was significantly overstaffed because employees were unproductive. They fired the ceo, cfo, and coo for it as well as a few senior VP's. I came in with the new exec team to fix things and rebuild the teams. The Board of Directors mandated no WFH, so we rolled with it. It was impossible to find quality managers and directors to work in office. I went through 4 controllers in 2 years because the ones available to work in office were sub-par. Lower level staff were adequate. 2 years later the new ceo's strategy failed and again the entire senior team got fired except me.

The new ceo said fuck it, hire the right person for the job wherever they live and he will defend his position to the Board. I hire locally to my office in Chicago and our office in Florida, I tell everyone it's hybrid to ensure they are willing to work and come into the office when necessary, but once they get here I tell them to work from home until I need to see them in the office. My new controller has been here since last April and has never seen the inside of the office, she gets her shit done and has the accounting team hitting deadlines and getting the work done.

Work from home can destroy a company and get everyone fired if it's not implemented and managed properly, but if you set the right framework and hire the right people it is awesome. Too many companies mismanage it, and the higher ups don't want to get fired over the issues other companies have with WFH.

I worked from home for several months during the pandy. I'd wake up, log in, the watch movies and play Fortnite all day. That's why WFH is frowned upon.
