The end of an era: Sony sells their TV business to TCL

Sony just announced plans to spin-off its television business as part of a new joint venture with Chinese company TCL.

Under the conditions of the deal, TCL will own 51% of the new company, while Sony will hold the remaining 49%, meaning it’ll no longer have a commanding stake in the business.

Despite this, TCL is expected to retain the ‘Sony’ and ‘Bravia’ branding for their future televisions.

Interesting.

I noticed over the weekend when I went to Sam's club, they had no Sony tvs at all on their sales floor.

Sony probably shut down their production already and is transitioning to having TCL make them at their Chinese junk factory.

Forgot Panasonic even made TV's, never really hear about them.

Always liked Panasonic, seems like everything I got from them works well and lasts a long time.

I have two higher end Sony OLED's, one of which I purchased late last year.

Seems to me that the vast majority of people are looking to buy cheap $200 tv's. Sony TV's are a premium.

Were Sony TVs even THAT good as they priced it? I always felt like they priced their flagship tv's at a far higher premium despite LG eclipsing them in the OLED department.

Feels like the 2010s onwards LG/Samsung became far better at making displays.

RIP sony bravia. My parent have a 15+ year old lcd sony tv and it still works perfectly.
Actually, the gap between, say, Plato or Nietzsche and the average human is greater than the gap between that chimpanzee and the average human. The realm of the real spirit, the true artist, the saint, the philosopher, is rarely achieved.
