What is better pension or 401k?

Say they both pay 12% but the pension has no cost of living adjustment so won’t adjust for the rapid hyperinflation also the pension takes like 10 years to be vested and get anything and it’s a job i very well may not be doing that much longer. But the pension pays you till you’re dead.

both are ideal

but i'd take a pension over a 401k since 401ks are directly tied to the stock market and can be volatile

your pension is a guarantee until the day you die

Doesn't the company you work for out in the money for the pension rather than you having to put in your own money for 401k.

Yeah I agree it’s just kinda a gamble if I end up doing this job that long cuz if I pick pension then don’t stay that long I don’t get anything and the 401k starts immidiately and o get to keep my match if I quit

Pension is much much better. Risk requires compensation is how textbook finance works.

I don't know how much US government bonds are paying but let's say they pay 3% and let's say the stock market pays 8%. Textbook finance considers US government bonds risk free when doing calculations. That 5% difference is the compensation for the risk.

Pensions are also considered risk free so if they're both 12%, the pension is 100% the way to go if you can stay the 10 years.

Pension can be drastically cut/taken away if a company goes under. I know people personally who lost their entire pension when a billion+ dollar company they worked for filed chapter 11. They also lost their retirement in the company's stock options. Would rather be vested in a 401k than reliant on a company.

OP works for the government. Then again, idk how government pensions work and if it's federal or state/local.

I wouldnt trust pension unless it's government which are pretty much the only pensions left

Then if they mismanage the pension investment fund the tax payers will just bail it out. Cucked
