What’s the point of buying a nice house if all you do is work?

Seems like every wagie’s dream is to buy a big house in the suburbs, but honestly I don’t see the point. Even if you only work 40 hours a week, that’s too long to actually enjoy your home. If we’re being generous, a full time wagie will only spend 4 waking hours per weekday at home. Literally half of what you’re spending at the office. All you really need is a toilet, stove and a bed. The rest is space you’ll seldom use.

The average monthly mortgage payment is ~$2500 now. Factor in utilities and average in home repairs. Now you’re looking at $3300+ each month just keep a roof above your head.

So the idea of wasting all that money on a mortgage just seems retarded. Might as well rent a smaller place.

I live in a 700 square foot apartment and it’s more than enough. Would I like more space? Sure, but not if it’s going to increase my monthly expenses by about 350%.

If you’re a NEET or retired, that’s a different story. If you have kids, I get it. But for a regular working man? Home ownership feels pointless when you really think about it.

Not my most eloquent post. You get the idea tho.

Discuss.

Fiat currency isn't backed by gold or anything so it's worth whatever Israeli financial manipulation says it's worth and can be inflated to nothing.

That's why houses are called real estate. It's a real store of value that won't hyperinflate and it's not a depreciating car.

It must suck being a wagecel and living in the middle of a major city like London, NY, Paris, Zurich. You are dropping £$£$€ on some little flat you barely see as you are working crazy hours.

If you like paying someone else (Apt) good for you. I bought this house for 389K 20 yrs ago, (its been paid off for 15 yrs), I can sell it for 889K. (But dont want/need to).
Ive been working from home in it this whole time, I got my killer garage gym, etc...
Someday if I sell, its a giant profit. You get nothing but making others rich... Houses, not for everyone, but neither is giving someone else my money..

true to an extend, I'll gladly pay a couple hundo bucks extra a month for the mortgage on my condo opposed to renting a similar one tho, it 's worth that to have skin in the game with how crazy house prices have risen the past years

maybe if monthly costs are over 50% more compared to renting it'd be smarter to rent and invest the difference (I'm sure there's all types of calculations on that threshold/price point)

It's nice to come a good size and comfortable home. Having an actual office instead of a corner of your bedroom. Having a family room for the kids and then a formal living room for adults. Having multiple bathrooms in case two people need to use them at the same time. Having multiple guest rooms so that your family is comfortable when they visit. Having your own gym with no waiting for machines, or having to clean other people's sweat. Having a multiple car garage and enough space for a shop for your hobbies. It's all good stuff.

Then there's the reality of many jobs getting easier as you climb the ladder, so as the house gets bigger, you also get more time to use it.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

Yeah i did that when working in DC in my 20's. Had a small basement studio apt in a great location but barely used it. Incredibly small too.

There are tons of tax breaks, subsidies, and laws favoring homeowners over renters. Like literally dozens of widely available giveaways to homeowners, many of them worth thousands of dollars per year. I really can't think of a single tax break or subsidy for renters.

There is a reason wealthy people overwhelmingly own their own home. If it didn't make sense, wealthy people would rent.

95% of millionaires own their home.

Yep

I’ll have yours nice and loose ready for you the minute you walk through the door. Put in a couple solid hours of work each day to prepare it for you.

Enjoy!

Don’t worry, he can’t even get himself a house let alone convince someone else to live in it with him.
