Years ago I was at a hardcore powerlifting gym and they were unironically slapping each other's asses at whilst squatting "to activate their glutes". Not once did I hear anyone utter the words "no homo, brah". Needless to say, I found the whole experience rather unsettling.

I workout with a personal trainer 3x per week. Only doing leg/core workouts right now because I'm recovering from surgery to my wrist a few weeks ago, but once my wrist is fully healed in another 2-3 weeks I'm about to go nuts to be in shape by Spring.

I hired one for a couple months to help work on my squats. Twice a week training. We didn’t do that, though. I got ripped off.

Had a trainer for my first 6 months of lifting. Haven't had one since.
Having a PT can be helpful when you start. Beyond that you'll make faster progress on your own if you have enough self motivation to train hard and continue to learn (YT videos, forums/subreddits, and strategic short term uses of trainers/coaches). Every single person I've seen with impressive or decently good lifts trains without an in person trainer for the most part. It's a bit different for competitive powerlifters who can benefit from a coach but most gym goers, even those with pretty crazy lifts (e.g. 4 plate bench) don't need a coach or trainer on an ongoing basis.
