SRS:How do I ask my boss for a raise?

I have my annual performance review coming up this week. I’ve been with this company for four years. The first two years I received promotions that came with a salary increase (20% and 8% respectively). Last year I did not receive any raise, nor did I ask for one. Every performance review I’ve had has fallen into the “exceeds expectations” range.

This year I feel I really need to try to negotiate a pay increase because I am getting to the point once again where I need to earn more money to outpace inflation or I’ll be underwater before too long.

How can I professionally ask my boss for a raise?

Ask them to consider your tenure with the company and how you’ve always exceeded expectations. If that doesn’t go well, just say that he has a beautiful wife and hope he drives home safe to see her

Use.AI to.write up a job offer that's 30 percent higher from a competitor. then tell him you like the location so would be willing to stay on for 25 percent raise. Then when he tries to negotiate down say 20 percent is the Lowest you can go take it or leave it.

Nope. Everything I post about my job is 100% factual (srs).

I just checked the system and April 16, 2024 was the last time I got a pay raise. I’ve been stagnant at $55k/yr since then. Thankfully inflation is low under Trump, but it’s not zero and without growth I will be stuck in this position forever.

My boss rescheduled my review, so I will have to wait another week until I can bring this up.

This. Unfortunately, in the modern business model, the possibility of you leaving is the only real motivator. As a manager, it's part of my job and we have guys that have been here for a long time, begging for a raise, and they have raised the bar and deserve one, but how we see it, is they don't have any better options and losing them wouldn't be that bad so the possibility of them getting a raise is 0. We have had them tell us they had offers other places and we were like, go. Got one guy, he's been here 25 years and hasn't had a raise in 10. We know he's stuck and won't leave. He's just mad all of the time but that doesnt' cost the company any money.

I guess my final answer is, find someplace else and maybe give the the opportunity to match it. This moving up the ladder with one company is last century. You have to step up using other ladders.

Here's what you do. You walk into his office randomly and unannounced. You sit down, put your feet up on his desk, and ask him if he's ever had the taste slapped out his mouth. Wait for 30 or so seconds and tell him you expect a 20% raise. Then walk out without saying another word.

Ask for a meeting to discuss your responsibilities and your compensation. Let him know that's what the meeting will be about so he's not caught off guard. During the meeting don't talk about what you want, talk about what you deserve, and back it up with metrics. Show how your work directly or indirectly saves the company money or makes the company money.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

Won’t bringing it up jeopardize my job? If the company has any inclination that I might be considering other opportunities, wouldn’t they immediately start preparing for me to quit? Any competent company would, I think. That means simply asking for a raise could lead to me being slowly pushed out. Feels like a lose-lose situation unless the boss is definitely willing to give a raise.

fuaaaark cant really say i havent been an employecel over a decade. However as a business owner 90% of the time whenever and employee has asked for a raise I have said yes. Imho if they have sticked around for so long then they have proved their worth so whatever their argument is it's irelevant, if you're making money out of their labour then it's only fair to keep them happy and motivated.

If simply asking for a meeting leads to you getting fired, you were not doing as well as you thought you were and were gonna get fired anyways. If they value your work, they will at least entertain the meeting, even if they don't give you the raise.

The ape is correct here OP; what leverage do you have? How are your accomplishments contributing to the company's financial performance?

You said that you are being consistently rated as "EE" which infers a structured Performance Management System including goals & measurement. Your goals should clearly illustrate that your performance is valuable to the organization or you have no legitimate leverage..
