Anthropic drops their flagship safety pledge

For those not in the know - Anthropic was a spin-off of OpenAI.

Elon and Sam Altman founded OpenAI as a non-profit dedicated to safely developing AGI while sharing the benefits with the entire human race.

Sam and Elon had a falling out.

ChatGPT comes out and is a overnight sensation.

Sam Altman gets drunk with power and greed and starts flying around the world living a luxurious lifestyle, making all sorts of insane promises, converting OpenAI from a non-profit to a for-profit company, and basically just doing everything possible to amass as much power and money as possible.

Shortly before this, some employees saw Sam's true colors and left OpenAI to found Anthropic, a non-profit that would REALLY safely develop AGI while sharing the benefits with the entire human race.

Anthropic used their "for-the-greater-good" philosophy to attract researchers and customers, many of whom are not solely influenced by money but prefer to make a positive change, or at least not to work alongside power-hungry goblins.

Anthropic AI tools now squarely beat most OpenAI AI tools, and Anthropic is seen as a market leader. Sometime along the way, Anthropic also converted from a non-profit to a for-profit, and now they're trying to go public.

As of today, Anthropic is dropping their pledge to build AI as safely as possible - aka the entire reason the company was founded in the first place.

Basically everyone in this space is a ghoul corrupted by money and power. Even if they didn't start out with those intentions, it took less than 5 years for them to get that way.

Is the temptation of unlimited money and power too much for anyone to safely handle?

nobody wants to fund $100bn in data centers if they're not getting the sole economic benefit.

I think everyone knew deep down what was going on.

They just wanted to believe it was a little better.
