"Need a jump?"

People don't know anything about cars anymore.

I've had two instances where someone asked me if I needed a jump in idiotic situations

One time I had a belt break driving down the road and so broke down on the side of the road. guy pulls up ask me if I need a jump. If the battery was dead how would I have made it this far ?

Second time, dirty IAC valve, so car starts but then would conk out if I let me foot off the gas. "Need a jump?" Bro the car is literally starting. no I do not need a jump

Those little booster boxes for jump starting are the shit though. if you don't have one get one.

So the belts power the accessories. Without the belt you can still drive but your battery would discharge rapidly. So it's perfectly reasonable to ask if you need a jump to get the car going so you can move it somewhere else.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

Also PROTIP: Get an odb2 scanner. Seen cars in limp mode that just needed a code cleared rather than a tow. That's actual help.

They're $30 and hook up to a free app on your phone

was already safely off the road in a neighborhood

how far can it really go on that? I thought you're risking damage pretty quickly.

Based on my googling, its a bad idea but you technically can jump a car in that situation and drive it a little while. I don't think the guy offering knew that, since he didnt know what was wrong, but I'll take the L that technically there are some situations where a jump could maybe be kind of useful in that context.

I've never seen jump used outside of "car wont start" context, but happy to have learned something new.

Yes you need it for all kinds of things, coolant pump, spark plugs, fuel pump.

I'm guessing a modern car would flip it's shit with the voltage getting out of spec with no alternator with all that draw

A jump start can also assist in situations where the alternator is not returning charge to the battery. This can result in the car having enough charge remaining in the battery to start but not to continuously drive accessories (especially headlights) or battery driven things such as ECU

So yes there are circumstances where your car could have started and driven and then need a ‘jump start’ to get to a garage

TLDR: you’re mad because you don’t understand how cars work

Cry harder dumbass

BTW I called you a retard, not an idiot

It’s an important distinction because retard is a clinical term to refer to people with below 70 IQ

seriously though - if you're going through it in life there's help out there.

it's worth thinking through why you have this anger, it's not a healthy way to live

For no belt,

It made me wonder so I asked AI, and did some more research and my answer is hell no. I was thinking the coolant pump was electrical.but it's belt driven for many cars including mine, so your engine will overheat very very quickly like within a few minutes hopefully it has some auto shut off feature if it doesn't it blows a head gasket

That would be the first problem before all others.

For battery related issues my mom's battery was dying and her TCU (transmission computer) threw a code but new battery it never came back it just didn't like the voltage out of spec from a dying battery

That's what I was thinking that it would be crazy to risk driving it vs a tow. Especially where if you've already been driving it (hence broke down on side of road), the engine is already warm. Still struggle to see a scenario where a jump is helpful after you've already been driving, but based on what some are saying certain engines/scenarios it could help. Like maybe the shop is 2 miles away and you wait an hour for the engine to cool off, but then your battery probably isn't even dead.

weak batteries can create all kinds of weird codes it seems, depending on the vehicle. Had a friends car throwing all kinds of random codes and I was helping them figure it out - eventually realized some AutoZone guy put an undersized battery in it. car's been great since.
