I used to be on the Misc, ever since I was like 15 or so. I had multiple alias' but none of the big names, though I did have some gnarly post counts and rep power at times. Names were Bruthar, Willful, Visel. Might've had another alias but it has been too long to know. I went to New Misc when BB's Misc shut down. No idea why New Misc shut down, but I didn't get the memo for why or where people moved after. Finally found this place recently.

A lot has happened! Some great, some terrible.

I've lived a fairly boring normy but safe life throughout my 20s. Never had any criminal activities, never got engaged/married/divorced or had any kids. Have a good career, paid off all my student loans / car loans / credit cards early and managed to get my first house (New construction 5/3 2.5k+ sqft) at age 29 with 20% down - still live in it but praying to God feds drop rates enough so that I can get out of 7%+ interest.

Last year towards my birthday weekend I was taking a long break from drinking and focusing hard at the gym and eating keto, got super lean (5'10 146 lbs or so). Finally said phark it, plan was to drink during the weekend and then go right back to the discipline mode. Well unfortunately for me, I made the decision to drive to my favorite bar.

Bar patrons and staff caught wind it was my birthday and they announced it loud and proud on a microphone: "Everyone give it up for Visel's birthday." Suddenly people are buying me free drinks. Next thing I know I'm doing field sobriety tests. I fell asleep at a stop sign in a back road. No crash/collision. Blew above 0.15 at the station. Spent a chunk of my birthday weekend in jail until I was able to sober up and pay the cash bond.

So it's a first offense DUI, aggravated due to my BAC level. Lost my license for 6 months (would've been 12 if I didn't blow). As I was leaving with the other DUI idiots (most were early-mid 20s), I recall all the cops saying "hope you got $10k, better have $10k, thank Mothers Against Drunk Driving for how crappy your consequences are going to be." Unfortunately the $10k cost ended up being pretty accurate.

One interesting thing is within the first 2 hours of leaving the jail, I get scam calls. "Hey Visel this is Officer so-and-so from the county jail we forgot to have you fill out an agreement and schedule a breathalyzer install, you can send it to us for $3,000 via crypto ATM or come in to the jailhouse." I nearly fell for it, srs. One of the "DUI buddies" actually did fall for it and got scammed out of $2k btw. What made it believable is how swiftly they call you after you're let out of jail, and how shook/emotional you likely are.

So first thing I did was find a DUI attorney ($6k) who told me there's nothing I can do except to do a program that would reduce the DUI to a reckless driving. I get my car back ($350), get a temporary license ($150) to get to work/groceries at least, take a MADD Impact Panel course ($300), attend DUI school for 2 days ($300), eventually get a breathalyzer ($250 install, $250 removal, $35/mo for 6 months), eventually get put on probation ($300 + $70/mo), have to do over 70 hours of community service (I was able to buy out half for $10/hr so that was $300), get my car impounded for 10 more days after ($100), and pay court fess ($550). The community service I did at a ministry, 75% of the time I was moving furniture around, the other 25% I was cleaning dishes or some other crap, most volunteers were there for DUI too, or some volunteer outting their job had them doing for a half a day.

Breathalyzer sucked arse. It literally kills your battery since it has to be plugged into the ignition and stays on 24/7. I actually got a violation once because the battery was totally dead and I needed the dealership to come and replace the battery for me. Well while they were doing it, because the breathalyzer demands a sample if the car's on, it became a violation since I wasn't there for it (another $70). Courts don't care about breathalyzer violations AS LONG AS IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ALCOHOL CONTENT, and you pay what you owe, but still annoying.

With a breathalyzer, you have to wait for it to start up, so that you can then finally blow and start it, but it's very easy to blow too little, too hard, and might have to take multiple tries. Then, while driving, every 10-15 minutes it will require you to breathe into it while you're on the road... so annoying. It's embarrassing to be at a parking lot, someone sees you enter your car and waits patiently for you to move so they can take your spot, and you have to sit there for 60+ seconds before the car can even turn on due to the damn breathalyzer.

The breathalyzer I had was PASS, FAIL, or WARN, nothing else. My probation officer told me if I had anything above a 0.00 it would be a violation and probably send me back to jail / kick me out of the chance of reducing to reckless, so stay away from certain foods and drinks, Listerine mouth wash, etc. I ended up buying a police grade s80 breathalyzer ($130) to be safe. Figured it would be fun once the DUI is over to test around what my BAC is from a number of drinks, but also be helpful to prevent driving drunk in the future as well. I still had anxiety over the fact that I couldn't see my 0.00, just PASS/FAIL/WARN, and every month the probation officer would look at the results to validate. Otherwise my interaction with the PO was solely a phone call every month and paying them $70, finding out how I did with my breathalyzer too.

Ultimately my DUi was reduced to reckless, I got off probation and court is done with me, but next step is to get it sealed ($300) and reach out to 3rd party background check sites to remove my record once it's sealed. My company/boss/HR is aware of the DUI but didn't care because I work remote anyways.
