Movie: Project Hail Mary
This movie is coming out on Friday. The reviews look really strong - 95% on RT after 190 reviews. Reviews say that it's even better than both The Martian and Interstellar
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/project_hail_mary
It appears to be a sci-fi comedy, starring Ryan Gosling. It runs at 2 hrs 30 mins. The plot is that some mysterious particles are eating our sun, but in another system far away, there's a sun that's still going. So they send Ryan Gosling to find out why that particular sun hasn't been affected. Along the way, he meets some friendly alien being
My local theater is showing The Deer Hunter tomorrow, and then Wings (1927) on Monday. So I think I might see Project Hail Mary late next week

10/10 book
Skeptical the movie will be that great after having read the book but will still watch at some point.

"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

I haven't been in a movie theater since maybe 2016.
SRS.
Hell, we rarely even WATCH movies anymore since anything made after 2016ish is always garbage and woke nonsense with shitty writing and acting. So we've mostly stopped watching movies completely. Maybe 3 movies we'll watch on streaming a year.
But this may be one of the movies I go see.

Essentially he becomes such a main character in the book for a vast portion of it, and the story itself, they had to give it away. So people understand it's a first-contact story as well, not just a doom and gloom apocalypse story.

I think it’s going to be good.
I heard they used zero CGI and it’s all real sets and practical effects.
If that’s true, I think you have to go to the theater just to support that alone. I also think it will make it a better movie.

Haven't seen it but my brother, his nephew, and a friend of ours saw it. Felt there was more comedy than the book (in the book it feels more as a coping mechanism for his character in a hopeless situation, and his personality as opposed to comedic events or situations). But outside of that they thought it was great.

NO SPOILERS

I finally got a chance to watch “Project Hail Mary” on 04/03/2026. I had high expectations. Some reviewers claimed that it’s better than “Interstellar” and “The Martian.” Having seen it myself, I think it’s about as good as “The Martian,” but it’s a shade below “Interstellar” for me.
I’m aware that Project Hail Mary is based on a book. In full disclosure, I’ve never read the book. Thus, I have no opinion about any differences between the movie and the book.
Anyways – I found the movie to be solid, overall. The pacing is great for a 2-and-a-half long movie: the runtime didn’t become a burden at any time. The story smoothly blends flashbacks with the present tense story. There’s a fine mixture of sci-fi disaster/drama and light-hearted comedy. Gosling is alright as the lead. His character is likeable.
Before I went into the movie, I read some remarks about how the movie gets technical with scientific jargon. While there's some brief scientific stuff involving the “dots” on the sun and such, there’s nothing that the average person wouldn’t understand.
There’s a good soundtrack. I like the use of the Beatles in the concluding sequence.
And lastly - the biggest highlight, easily, is the buddy-buddy relationship between Gosling and the alien being whom he meets. I won’t spoil it by noting details. But it gets very touching near the end: I really got a little choked up at one point near the end
I’d say the movie has a few problems:
Some details get condensed too much. When he meets the alien, he solves the language barrier in what seems like a few days. It seemed too easy
The crux of the story is that Gosling has to save the planet. The movie could’ve better established the high stakes and urgency behind the mission. I think of the opening parts of Interstellar, where they show how the Earth is dying. This movie needed something similar.
During the flashbacks, a big role goes to a German government agent played by Sandra Huller. She’s kinda weak. When she appeared on-screen, I often got the vibe of “Temu Rebecca Fergurson.” There’s a karaoke scene with Huller that doesn’t have the emotional punch that was likely intended.
The alien creature could have looked more exotic and cooler. It looks like the Pokemon named Geodude with some Pixar elements.
There’s an exciting sequence where Gosling does a spacewalk to collect specimens. This part was the movie’s chance to render some cool, outer-space sci-fi visuals. Instead, scene is mostly some green light around Gosling, which I found disappointing.
Lastly, I think the movie could’ve been trimmed in the finale. Without spoiling, I’ll say that there’s a false ending, and then there's about 15-20 minutes until the real end. I would’ve actually chosen the false ending as the actual ending; it would’ve been a stronger conclusion.
7.5/10.

Just saw it.
Gosling was good but the movie was avg af.
There were some good scenes and there was nothing wrong with the movie, it was just way too long for what it was.
I wouldn’t watch it again.
I wouldn’t put it anywhere near the level of interstellar or arrival.
It was more of a poor man’s The Martian with Gosling doing his best Brad Pitt acting impersonation.
