Misc Lawn and Garden Crew - GTFIH

Sup lawn and garden misc. Putting the call out to all my lawn and garden brahs. I had a running thread back on newmisc and figured id do it here too. Let's talk green.

Just cut the lawn for the first time this season yesterday, felt good to get it under control. There are a few areas where I am going to level out a bit but nothing else is planned here this season.

I have been prepping the veggie garden beds throughout the winter, adding compost and some more mulch. Peas and carrots are planted outside, broccoli is hardening off. Tomatoes and peppers are started inside.

Front flower beds got weeded and composted, need to finish mulching. I have a lot of activity in this bed; Yarrow, Bee Balm, Mountain Mint, Various Carex's, Coneflower and Black Eyed Susans all survived the winter and are poised to blow up.

Native Wildflower beds are waking up, I cut all the standing stems by hand and piled them up in case of any still nesting bugs. Then ran through the beds with a mower to help suppress some weeds. I have a lot of seedling here now and a ton of shoots coming up, second year of this bed so it should fill in very nicely.

What outside projects do you have going on misc?

This is OB misc. The people here don't even touch grass, let alone take care of a garden.

Do it. I like to do themes and "challenges". Last year it was the "Sauce, Salsa and Stew" garden, so lots of tomatoes, onions, peppers, carrots, celery and potatoes. This year it is "Pickled", so lots of cucumber (sour pickles), sweet peppers, jalapeño (Smoked to make Chipotle pepper) and poblano (smoked to make ancho pepper). Doing a few tomatoes still too, but nowhere near what I did last year.

We just got 15cm of snow yesterday. It's going to be May before I touch my lawn, probably.

Ooh nice. We're behind you, but I need to get my spring stuff in. Maybe today. We've done pretty big gardens in the past, but we'll probably scale back a little this year. I'll post more as I go.

I have a lawn crew to take care of my yard, but the seed they use to replant doesn't last, I let them reseed it 3 years and last year I told them to stop and I got scott's dense shade and did it myself, seems to have worked. Picked up another 6 bags yesterday and some peat to fill in the weaker areas again this year.

Honestly whatever flowers catch my wife’s eye. We have some roses, hydrangeas, etc that are perennial then she fills in the gaps either annuals. It’s more her project than mine though I always end up doing the watering

Nice! Sometimes its best to do it yourself.

I am unsure where you are but a good 2" of mulch should help drastically in water frequency. I am in East TN and I think I watered things a couple of times last year, I have between 2-3 inches of mulch on everything.

Dipping into the mid 30s tn. Need to pull in some plants =/.

Not yet. I ran out of sunlight last weekend and then it's been windy this weekend and I've been watching basketball, lol. It's ready to plant I'll get it in in the next couple days. Probably.

Spring has sprung. A few specimens from the garden:

Wild Bergamot (Monarda Fistulosa)

Scarlet Bee Balm (Monarda Didyma)

Black Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia Hirta)

Eastern Bluestar (Amsonia Tabernaemontana)

Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis)

Wild Hyacinth (Camassia Scilloides)

I'll need to do a bigger update tomorrow when its raining. Hope everyone is having a good day!

My wifes mom has a nice piece of property to where they retired to in NC. They are actually about to sell soon and downsize since its becoming way too much work for them as they are aging.

Broccoli is coming in. Picked some for dinner tonight (Steak, potatoes and broccoli).

I usually pick on the "earlier" side but this guy is about as good as it gets.

This one will be eaten tomorrow.

Not too bad.

Steaming with some butter and salt.

Question for garden people - did I kill this bush by putting too much mulch around it?

Is the base of the trunk exposed or covered in mulch? Either way, that guy looks like gone. The base of the trunk needs to be clear of mulch to prevent rot and to allow o2 transfer for the roots.

You're way ahead of me. I have spinach, peas and carrots up in my square foot garden and I started some tomato plants last weekend. I need to get the rest in this week. I'll get some pics in the next few days.

Square foot garden:

Carrots on the right and top right. Not very big yet but they're doing great. Spinach is up (adjacent to carrots) and doing fine. Peas are doing great on the far left. Everything in between in mostly weeds. I planted lettuce and beets in there and they didn't come up well at all. I replanted the beets a couple days ago, still need to do the lettuce.

I planted tomato plants a couple weeks ago. We use water walls to get things started before the last frost - it actually froze last night and it's likely we get another freeze or two in the next few days.

Hi Saar

I live in Mumbai slums, those are nice vegetables you are growing I would love to stomp them with my feet in the stew pot

Next week I hope to patch my roof leak, my brother has found a sheet of corrugated steel in the river and we can use it for my roof

Also looking forward towards a bonus from the call center. I got ms robinson to give her 401k to my boss by being Microsoft technical support so he promised to share proceeds with me
