The delayed version v1.4.0 of Snails, the OB forum engine, has now been released. Alongside this, I’ve also published the 2026 Q1–Q2 Roadmap (scroll to the bottom), which outlines upcoming features.

Reminder: bbcode no longer needed for embedding external content!

First, before I talk about v1.4.0, I’d like to remind everyone that the previous version (v1.3.0) allows embedding images, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and more using just the direct URL no BBCode tags are required, unless you’re creating nested structures, such as posting inside spoiler tags (a fix for this is also coming). For images, the direct link should usually end with a standard image extension, such as .jpg, .png, .gif, etc.

Now, onto v1.4.0...

v1.4.0 is a significant update, as it shifts the forum more toward a forum-first experience rather than an archive-first one. The most notable changes include the introduction of a notification system, updates to the reputation system, and improved visibility of thread participation.

v1.4.0 introduces a notification system

If someone replies to you in a thread, you will now receive a notification. The notification disappears once you visit the thread page containing the reply. Be mindful if you have been quoted multiple times on the same page. Recent notifications are stored in UserCP > Notifications, but they are also visible throughout the forum and highlighted with a small red bell icon on the thread envelope.


At the moment, post mentions (e.g., @allfather) are not yet enabled, but they will be activated once v1.4.0 is confirmed to be working as intended.

Reading all notifications
Adding notifications is one challenge; making them accessible and easy to find is another. You can view unread notifications in several places, such as UserCP > Notifications, but most of them will also appear in the newly created (and admittedly awkwardly named) forum “Participated Threads,” which contains all threads you’ve participated in. You may also see them appear naturally as you browse the forum.


Turning off notifications
At the moment, it is not possible to turn off notifications. This will be added soon, but for now I want to ensure everything is working as intended before enabling the opt-out option in UserCP > Settings.

v1.4.0 updates the reputation system

User rating systems such as reputation or likes/dislikes are notoriously difficult to keep fair and abuse-free. The following changes have been made to address some of these concerns.

1. High-rep users can now choose to apply less “strength” when giving reputation. A post may not always warrant the full weight of their reputation, and this provides more flexibility.


If you normally give reputation with a value of X, using 50% strength will apply 0.5 × X, and so on. Regardless of strength, each action still counts as a single rep.

The default remains 100%, i.e., full strength, as before.

Note: The strength option is only visible for very high-rep users: This feature is only relevant for users with high reputation, and is therefore not visible below a certain threshold.

2. It is also now more difficult to fall into deep red reputation. Backend changes slow this process down, although it is still possible.

3. Additionally, a weekly limit on negative reputation (“negs”) is now in place.

Repeatedly negging the same user is not necessarily harassment, but it can be part of it. To reduce potential abuse, there is now a cap on how often a user can neg the same person per week. This should not affect normal interactions, as data shows that while repeated negging does occur, it is relatively infrequent.

The reputation system will likely continue to be adjusted over time, but I hope these changes feel reasonable.

v1.4.0 introduces thread statuses

Threads will now be marked as new, visited, or visited with new posts.

Other changes

v1.4.0 also includes improvements across the board for embedding images, TikTok, and other external media, as well as (hopefully) fixing the annoying Vocaroo autoplay issue.
