Have you ever considered learning new languages as a hobby/education?

I have been trying to a bit of that since the last few days and really liking it.....but yeah it gets mind boggling at times....I don't know how long I would be doing this...but the learning is endless as in many languages to explore....

I think I should continue doing that for a while since I am bored of pretty much everything else in life....

Honestly no. if it wasn't because of my background. I don't think i would speak more than one language. But if i ever decide to have kids its going to be mandatory they speak Spanish.

Cool with that....

Learning a few too many and having a good memorable grip over it can be kinda confusing and a difficult task...like your hours of practice may go into waste...

Yep, I thought of doing that when I'm bored on business trips sitting in my hotel. I downloaded some spanish language tutorials. I spent about 2 hours learning Spanish, it reminded me that I can't stand learning foreign languages.

If you live in the US it's probably going to be mandatory they speak Spanish whether you like it or not.

I work so many different places that trying to learn the languages is almost pointless.
I usually try to pick up a little more Portuguese every time I go to Brazil simply because so few Brazilians speak English.

The thing about languages is you have to use them or you lose them. As my wife's English got better, my Tuvaluan got worse.

Aren't they also hard to learn when you don't have anyone else who speaks them? My son took Spanish from K-12 and learned more in a couple months while working in a kitchen at a bar/restaurant with mexicans.

I only speak English and NewMisc . Srs I wish I had the brain power to learn another language. I seen this guy on YouTube who was fluent in 20 languages, and I’m like what kind of brain power do you need to be able to do that .
I have always thought German was a cool language to listen to , as well as Russian and Spanish . Anything but French , fk that’s a painful language to listen to srs

I think that is only partially true

I took 4 years of spanish.in highschool and middle school and leaned a ton basically near fluent in reading but I didn't retain most of it.since I didn't use it

And Spanish in k-5th grade was a joke they hardly taught us anything until 6th grade so I don't count that because they didn't teach us grammar and sentence structure

My opinion is they should have been far more aggressive teaching it in the elementary school we could have learned way more

It's not that you don't learn anything on school it's that you don't retain it once you stop taking classes

I'm Colombian so my first language is Spanish and English is second.. but i do agree if you don't practice the language you will lose it, but that can be said about anything really.

And it will never be mandatory to speak any language even in countries where they do have an official language. It all depends on what you do, like if you work in construction it's in your best interest to learn some Spanish. I know some Albanian general contractors who speak pretty fluent Spanish. So they speak 3 languages, English, Spanish and Albanian.

Like if i was born in America, i'd have zero interest in learning another language but that's me

Lol, every time I go travel for months I come back committed to learning another language so I can smash Latinas. But in reality I don't have time for that shit anymore.

Yep. One of the biggest helps when I first started learning Tuvaluan was my next door neighbors wife because she would actually correct me. The irony was that her British husband didn't speak the language at all.

My mom used to teach ESL classes and her biggest frustration was that the Hispanics wouldn't use it at all outside of class.

I did learn German on Busuu for a good few months. I admit I kinda lost interest when I reached a higher level. Haven't touched German since Aug 2021.

Took Spanish all through school and use Duolingo daily, mostly for Italian but sometimes French or a Spanish refresher. You’d be surprised how it helps. Went to Italy last fall and thanks to Duolingo and the obvious similarities to Spanish I had a pretty good idea what people were saying. But I’ll never be anywhere near as fast as a native speaker.
