reading it now. its a wild book. not too far in but sentences dont follow each other with any clarity. like basically a schizo lit but the book is praised for some reason. muh guess its praised for the time it was written over 100yrs ago for being different. now its like scrolling on twitter or something where no topic really follows the next.

yeah i've read some snippets so far that are actually great. like one sentence beeing better written and more descriptive than entire books I've read.

but very hard to really read without losing track of what is going on like Dostoyevsky. think about getting a helper or reading a tutorial but don't wanna feel like I'm a pussy. maybe i'll give it a shot for a while then get some college guide for it though.

It's coming up on my list. On Infinite Jest rn, whose longass sentences and sentence structure in general have been different, though I imagine it's much less of a deciphering process compared to Joyce. Also, are you a bot?

do bots talk about Joyce or DFW? i loved infinite jest but that was easier to read than joyce. i went to a book reading of his long ago and he signed a my copy of infinite jest. I sold it for like 5-10 bucks at the time because I had so many books I had to get rid of some. had i kept it it woulda been worth hundreds i'm sure.

oh well. interesting David Duchovny (x files guy) was in the audience of maybe 50 people as well. he was chatting with dfw as he was thanking him for coming. dd looked like a total chad in real life. super tan.

I'm actually like many people ...i've tried to read ulysses long ago. i just figured i'd finally do it after getting back into reading. if you read one great book its like suddenly you rediscover how awesome they are....I read a book called stoner...somewhat predictable but still great. Ive read a lot though so its hard to surprise me.

dfw is at least contemporary so you can relate to him. joyce references are 100 years old if not 1000 and so it makes it difficult to really hang on.

Yeah, I've been getting back into reading by reading a bunch of classics and modern favorites myself. I usually enjoyed them back in school, too. Norm Macdonald's reading list is kinda guiding me a lot lol.

I like the contemporariness of IJ, but I'm not sure I find it that much easier than the older stuff I've been reading. DFW is always naming weird plastics or medical conditions, I'm constantly looking up words, and there are the long sentences as I said. Anna Karenina had Levin talking about lifting after a breakup, certainly got that reference lol. War and Peace was hard to follow just because it had too many damn characters. Didn't know who were the main characters until like 500 pages in lol. IJ probably has worse footnotes, too, though I live in Boston right now, so the setting is certainly very familiar. I know Ulysses is supposed to be on another level of course though. One day.

You gotta read it as free-flowing and come back to the notes. initially I remember I was like that looking everything up. coincidentally dfw did not write all that free-flowing out of his head but came back to revise and add stuff ....had he written like the book out of his head he would be Tesla tier genius imo. maybe try to read a chapter and then mark or make note of something you might wanna come back to. most of those medications are antidepressants so really you can just overlook them as they all have essentially the same function.

A LOT of it is not important to the story which is what you have to focus on tbh. also don't get caught up in the nuances of his writing style....just plod along...that is currently what i am trying to do with Ulysses and rather am focusing on particularly beautiful sentences rather than the story itself. hopefully that understanding comes later.

if you want a great book to read try....confederacy of dunces. truly a great great hilarious book (he is like a fat OG judgemental miscer posting his thoughts in the 50s/60s). its a very famous book ....read the introduction to the book LAST...for the plot twist IRL.

Ah na man, I gotta read all the notes. I save up a few sometimes so I'm not doing so much flipping back and forth, but I gotta read em in context. And no, I like thinking about his writing style. I also am not too worried about the story, though I feel it's more worldbuilding than story for the most part. Maybe that's just me being early in the book though.

Yeah lol have seen some of those. Hearing him talk is what convinced me to start reading IJ.
