I dunno. I just randomly thought how strange of an idea it was to even begin with. going from a comfortable theatre in the dark to sitting in a car watching through a likely dirty windshield.

Richard M. Hollingshead Jr. (sometimes spelled Hollingshead) is widely credited with inventing and patenting the modern drive-in theater concept.  Hollingshead was a sales manager at his father's auto products company (Whiz Auto Products) in Camden, New Jersey. He was a movie enthusiast who reportedly got the idea because his mother (described as rather large or tall) struggled to fit comfortably in traditional indoor theater seats. He wanted a way for people to enjoy movies from the comfort of their own cars.

I went a few times as a kid, thought it was great, sit in the car with your family. Fun times.

Yeah we had a drive-in theatre a couple miles away when I was a kid. I usually fell asleep in the back seat tho.

They had a speaker they would mount on the window or something, audio wasn't bad.

They're all gone. There one in the Northern Illinois area, way out in the boonies from Chicago. They play old movies. Some chick I was dating a few years ago wanted to go there with my kids, but I didn't want her to meet them yet. It was a good move, she was diagnosed with BPD a year or 2 after we broke up.

No what you want to do is take an suv or a mini van … fold the seats down or remove the 3rd row in the case of a mini van and then load it up with blankets and pillows then back in so the back is facing the screen

1. Peak car culture
2. You could drink and drive back then, have a couple beers in your huge chevy
3. You could get a hand job in peace while you watch the movie

There was one in West Chicago that I used to go to. Shut down in 2018 and is still vacant. They were supposed to build apartment complexes on it (of course) but it never happened. There is a really good chicago hot dog/beef place still there called Scooby’s on the way in that we’d always stop by first

also everyone who reads this is going to think you are talking about the west side of Chicago, for the misc it's a town 30-45 minutes west of Chicago

People were way more private in the past. People spent a lot more time with their families, they weren't looking to sit next to a bunch of random people in the theater. A drive in theater could ensure that you and your date would not be bothered by other people during that time.

The type of people going to a Drive In theater would jump off of a bridge if they saw today where everybody is on social media posting all of their information.

I love drive-ins. You pay by the car load. Bring your own snacks and drinks. Bring lawn chairs. Back up the SUV with the back seat removed. Spread out some blankets. And sound is through your car stereo, so it only sucks if your stereo sucks.

1) Cheaper to build than a theater which means lower cost of entry

2) More privacy than sitting next to randoms who are inconsiderate in public

Times have shifted a bit. Drive-Ins became really trendy about 10 year ago. New ones started popping up with new tech.

Back in the 90s, Texas had like 3 left. My dad lived like 30 miles from one. We used to go often. I saw Twister there. Independence Day. Power Rangers. Mars Attacks. A bunch of stuff.

Almost all the drive ins are long shutdown

I remember going to one with my uncle and mom when I was a kid and I thought it was at the fleemarket but after googling no it long since been turned into a Lowe's shopping center

Where do some of you guys live or how old are some of you. I'm 39 and I've never seen one outside of a movie.
