Are you saving and investing more to avoid the permanent AI underclass?

Some people say AI will replace many/most jobs within the next 10-20 years.

If that's the case there will be no way for you or your descendants to survive, unless you were financially independent prior to the transition or get government handouts.

Is anyone taking this seriously enough to change their spending habits and save more? At the very least to set their children up?

If you aren't a high earner your best chance is probably to go Amish. Buy a decent bit of land with water on it. Set yourself up to survive outside the system. Established ownership, self-sufficient as possible, with regular expenses low enough to cover with a part time gig or two- meaning the unavoidable like taxes and mandated insurance/fees, necessary services.

I have had the same thought but you still need to own land and pay taxes on it. High quality farmland is about $10,000 per acre.

So at a certain point you may as well just invest in the stock market anyway - either one requires capital.

people will have to start homesteading again. maybe thats a good thing bc they wont be so exposed to societal garbage and propaganda

i feel like there will be super cities that are super technological ai robot police etc and then "outside" there is just ruin, poverty and decayed infastructure

Have like 200k inn student loans as well. Getting rid of 2 cards next month or so. Debt is a prison.

You don't need that much acreage. And it needn't necessarily be "high quality farmland" which could be full of salt and chemicals if it had been under long term use. Check out permaculture and food animals like chickens, rabbits, and goats.

It is a lot of real deal physical work though. Not great for older people.

If you can come up with the down payment for a median house you should be able to take a shot at it. If not maybe you could find family willing to go in together. Maybe.

Most people don't want to sacrifice their accustomed way of living and that is understandable. Though it sure feels like the time to make a move was yesterday.

This gal dealt with a less than ideal lifestyle for over 4 years so that she could pay off her land and get a cabin.

You would definitely need to keep a low profile and/or be on good terms with the neighbors so they don't call the authorities on you for using your own land in an unapproved way.

Meh.

Last I've read the expectation is for AI to eliminate 20% to 25% of jobs.

How many will be taken over by robots? Simple labor stuff?

I mean maybe it will all work out in the long run...below replacement birth rates. But in the short term it sure seems likely that there will be an excess of available labor along with a reduced market for goods and services as people without jobs/income are spending constrained.

There are still a lot of old people. Might be able to get in on that caretaking for gym and protonz deal. All robot nursing homes would be bleak.

Yeah, I took them, as a working class kid with not many options and went to the states. Loans were from our government though not yours.

My son is very bright and loves math. We do a lot of Lego together and I pretend to be excited about all of his 3D printing because I believe this will be the best way for him to thrive in the future.
