Adopted a new doggo from the shelter!
Was scrolling and found this dog that looks a lot like my Ava and it hit me because I could read what she was feeling. Found out the post was too late and they said she had been killed but then came back and said she was missed by the kill team there I guess so I reached out and adopted her. Rescue pulled her and is having her vetted and spayed, then she is transported to me.
I've never adopted a dog I have never met. Houston, Harris County Texas has so many great dogs there, if you want a dog, that's the place. They are a high kill shelter too.

Pretty crazy when you think about it. They're locked up on death row just for existing.

Thanks everyone. Yeah, it's super sad they are on death row for existing, because their owners and breeders actions. I'd fill my house if I could. I'm going to take her in, might offer to start fostering but I'll get attached. Animals are expensive and need attention.

I'd love to foster seniors so that they have a loving home to live the last couple years of their lives. The people that put seniors in shelters are the WOAT. They don't deserve to be in a stressful shelter.

I currently have 7 fucking cats living in my house. The first was adopted as a pet from someone who couldn't handle it. Another one showed up at my door begging to come in and wouldn't leave. Another stray wandered into my home and crapped out a bunch of babies. She had 5 but one was adopted already

A cat walked into our old house and started casually drinking water from the toilet.

She was delivered from a transport truck called Lucky Tails Express at 1:30AM Sunday. She was terrified, wouldn’t walk totally shut down. I picked her up and is very light and just shaking. You can tell this poor dog has been through it. Once home, she was still shut down. Kind of trying to hide. Slightest motions she huddles down like she’s going to get beat on.
Once home, I set up a crate with a bed, and she took right to it. I think the first night she just slept. No accidents to clean up. Next day she does walk on a leash, knows to potty outside, and crazy how she already sees my house as home. She doesn’t want to lose sight of it and tries to pull towards the house. She’s eating good, I got her some puppy food so she can start on dem gains. This morning she kind of came out of her shell and acted like a normal dog for a minute. Now she is watching us from her crate, instead of just huddling in a corner trying to hide.
3/3/3 rule. 3 days to decompress, 3 days to learn about your routine, 3 months to feel at home.

Just be patient and gentle with her and I bet she comes out of her shell and will be your best friend before you know it.

Update on Ella. About the 3 week mark. She's filled out and her fur looks so much better. Thick, solid, tight, looks like a dog that has a home. Little by little her personality has come out. She still is apprehensive and clings to her crate. We leave it open most of the time when we are there so she can come and go and she has been coming into our room, stays a bit, then runs back. Sometimes she will mess on the floor I think because she hasn't figured out how to tell me she's got to go out, plus the heartworm meds have her stomach messed up. She tries to be a good dog. Spicy, she's from the streets and she's not afraid to show it. She doesn't like women much, especially if they are loud. Seems she likes peace and quiet, so she matches the home perfectly. Guards the house hardcore. My other dogs might bark or let me know but Ella the hair is raised and she is firm and growling if she doesn't know someone. This is her home, this is her family, she probably went her life without that so she knows.
If you get a dog like this, understand the dog at the shelter, the dog you first get home, that's not who they really are, and it's going to take time. Most of these dogs have been let down and mistreated by people so it's going to take some time for them to learn to trust but it doesn't make them bad dogs.
