Treading New Ground
I grew up being conditioned to believe that we were headed towards a crisis of too many humans. Given how fertility had fallen off after 1960 it probably wasn't a given even then, but I could see how extended lifespan and higher birth rates in other countries might support the conclusion.
Why has the birth rate fallen off so hard? It sure seems like it is driven by worsening economic conditions for more people.
What happened in 1990? The S&L crisis.
That little peak and drop in 2001? The dot com bust.
And I expect everyone here is old enough to recall 2007, aka: The Great Recession.
Isn't it curious that the birth rate never recovered after that? I've personally believed that what was broken in 2007 was never truly repaired. And I've seen commentary referring to this as a secret or hidden depression, but no luck finding that at the moment. Ironically the only reference I turned up was from the WEF.

This article from 2018 said that our recovery from the Great Recession was going more poorly than the recovery from the Great Depression.
https://www.milkenreview.org/articles/was-the-great-recession-more-damaging-than-the-great-depression
"Indeed, this is the year, the eleventh after the start of the crisis, when national income per worker relative to its pre-crisis benchmark begins to lose the race to recovery relative to the Great Depression. This year, income per worker will be 7.5 percent higher than in 2007 — compared to 10.5 percent 11 years after 1929. And next year, if we are lucky, income per worker will be 9 percent higher, compared to a remarkable 29 percent higher 12 years after 1929."
It's pretty wild that our birth rate held roughly between 1.8 and 2.5 throughout the 70s stagflation
while now we are at 1.62.
Something else that has steadily trended downward.

I skimmed it. I never believed we recovered from '07. In '15 I definitely didn't believe it, when they were acting like we did.
Now, idk. We are in a more globalized economy than we've ever seen. It's hard to say, but as long as you can support yourself and your loved ones, I think that's the best you can do. I think it's good enough for me.

"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."
