Just finished a trip through Germany - random thoughts
I did a 2 week tour, basically. I got back yesterday afternoon. The spots that I hit were: Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Munich (w/ Neushwanstein), Nuremberg, Berlin, Dresden, and Cologne.
Cliffs:
- I don't know a word of German outside of Danke and "Du" (from the Rammstein song "Du Hast"). But really, almost everyone in Germany speaks good English. The majority of the signs, museum displays, and announcements were offered in both English and German. You can get by with just English ... Visiting these places overseas, I often feel fortunate to be an English-speaker because all those foreign countries seem to accomdate English-speakers.
- I mostly used the train to get around in Germany (https://int.bahn.de/en/). It was pretty easy and straightforward. There were a few slight delays, ranging from 5-15 minutes, here and there. But the German trains overall were reliable and fast. The engines are so quiet that I didn't feel as if I needed the noise cancelling in my headphones. The trains all had wifi.
- I'm a picky food eater, so I'm glad that Germany has this health-food store called "Alnatura" all over the place.
- Anyways, I began in Frankfurt and stayed 2 nights there. Really, Frankfurt is boring as chit, about as interesting and pretty as Columbus, Ohio or something. The only part of Frankfurt that I found to be remotely interesting and scenic was the Old Town / Romerberg area.
- If you go to Germany, you might start at Frankfurt too because that's where a lot of flights go. My advice might be to just to hop on the train once you arrive in Frankfurt. Or fly into Frankfurt in the morning, spend a few hours walking around and seeing the Old Town, and then go somewhere else later that day or next morning. But I wouldn't advise anyone to stay in Frankfurt long
- After Frankfurt, I went to Heidelberg. I found it decent. The Old Bridge Heidelberg offers some ok views. I spent one day in Heidelberg, which was enough.
- After Frankfurt, I took a train to Munich. On my first day at Munich, I decided to rent a car and drive down into Schwangau to see Neuschwanstein Castle and Linderhof Palace. I consider this day to be the highlight of my whole trip. Although some of their roads get a little too narrow, driving in Germany is pretty easy for an American. Their roads are well-maintained; their drivers are disciplined. I liked the autobahn. The drive to Neuschwanstein Castle and Linderhof Palace goes through some scenic areas with green fields, farmlands, and yellow daffodils. Both Neuschwanstein and Linderhof Place are pretty
- In Munich itself, I spent a day walking around by Marienplatz and other spots. It was decent. I also visited Dachua concentration camp. It was an OK experience.
- I went to Nuremberg after Munich. I was interested in this city because I had recently watched the 9.5/10 movie with Spencer Tracy called "Judgment at Nuremberg." Naturally, I visited the Palace of Justice where they held the Nuremberg trials. Frustratingly, this was one place where the museum displays were entirely in German, not English. But I liked the courtroom on the 6th floor. I also like the Frauenkirche church, the spot where Spencer Tracy buys a hotdog in the movie
- After Nuremberg, I went to Berlin for about 4 days. Berlin is a nice, cosmopolitan city that felt like a mix of Philadelphia and Montreal. I like Brandenberg Gate, Berlin Cathedral, Gendarmenmarkt, and Victory Column. The Topography of Terror museum is good
- In Berlin, I visited Checkpoint Charlie and the Berlin Wall at East Side Gallery. Both of them could've been better. Checkpoint Charlie is at some busy intersection, with a lot of touristy places around it. It's a buzzkill to see KFC and McDonald's right next to Checkpoint Charlie. As for the Berlin wall - they have all kinds of artwork drawn on it. The artwork is ugly
- There's a Jewish Memorial around the main attractions. I found it to be a dull memorial.
- From Berlin, I did a day trip to Dresden. I found Dresden to be one of the highlights of Germany, with a lot of pretty buildings (Semper Opera, Church of our Lady, Frauenkirche). The Furstenzug mural is also quite impressive
- After Berlin, I basically wrapped up the trip in Cologne. The Cologne Cathedral is impressive in size, almost resembling an alien spaceship kinda. There's a chocolate museum about 25-minutes walk from the Cathedral that's decent too.
- Overall, I recommend Germany. If you go, definitely rent a car in Munich and drive down to Neuschwanstein. I might go back to Germany to see some of their national parks

I last went to Germany in May 2018 and visited Cologne, Krefeld, amongst other places. I went during a mad heatwave, which made walking around during the day uncomfortable. Been to Germany 4 times in total over my lifespan. Berlin is a great city to visit. A lot of culture and things to see for sure (like what remains of the wall).

Mirin trip.
Went to Austria/Vienna 2 yrs ago. Got a hotel close to schönbrunn palace as wanted to see the yearly outdoor summer concert there - classical music. In the same area they got the oldest still open zoo in the world (1790's) so went there many days to take pics of them animals.
People were not very friendly or helpful though. Some locals told me it was way different 20 yrs ago, but something changed. Supposed to be more polite outside Vienna though.
