SRS In 2026, with food and living prices crazy high, is it still feasible to have a family?
Everytime my wife eats an egg or a banana, or has a glass of bottled water, I get stressed out. If I have children, will it not shorten my life by decades, through sheer stress on the finance level?

It’s definitely tough out there and we thankfully closed on our house in March 2020 right before the Covid real estate mogging (we bought for 375k on Long Island, house is now worth like $660k)
It’s feasible to have a family though, we’d definitely be much more paycheck to paycheck if we had bought a house now as opposed to 6 years ago, but we’d still be able to make it

Foods really not that expensive TBH. People just generally don't know how to cook or buy their meats(no diddy) already prepped. Like with chicken deboned, skinless. Buy veggies that are in season. If your going to buy fruit don't buy it already cut up, do it yourself. ultimately it's a combo of general laziness and ignorance when it comes to food.

I grew up in a working class house so my mom was always shopping sales and cooking meals and my wife grew up in a poor-ish house so her mom was doing the same. It’s still ingrained in us to be frugal like that even if we are solidly middle/upper middle class right now. It’s a good thing IMO, even if we were millionaires I think we’d be doing the same, at the very least to set an example for our kids

I never wanted kids but if I did want them I would have them regardless of finances. Poor people have kids every day and they survive. I would just go for it and figure it out later.

I have a wife and 5 kids but I have no idea what we spend on groceries. My wife does all the shopping. She's a stay at home mom so I'm the sole provider. We're not ballin, but it's fine. We still have to much stuff.
@silence3 - $1000 per month for three seems pretty high though. it works out to 3.58 per person per meal. A few years ago, I think we were more around 600 or 700 for a month. Maybe they aren't subtracting out non food items? That's what makes it annoying to track for us.

in a pinch i can live off 13-15$ CAD(like 9$ USD) of food a day. but i usually just buy pre made meals and i end up spending 22-25$ a day on food. saves a hour or so of cooking so whatever. paying 10$ to reclaim a hour of my day

Plus if it really hits the fan: eggs, turkey/chicken, rice, beans, and a good number of frozen vegetables are cheap AF.
Or just take up hunting and blow a deer's head off. That's 100+ lbs of meat for like $0.80 if you don't count labour.
