EVERYTHING changed in 2012 and here is why:

In 2012 researchers at Google Brain (Google's AI division) discovered how to use machine learning to make computers capable of recognizing photographs of cats.

This was the precursor to virtually all AI used today.

Big Tech immediately began using these techniques for almost everything, from suggesting YouTube videos to ad targeting to facial recognition.
