Why did the new He-Man movie underperform at box office?
https://www.boxofficemojo.com/release/rl973309441/?ref_=bo_hm_rd
It opens at $29.3M domestically and $25M internationally.
That puts it in line for, maybe, $150M total (depending on its legs)
The movie has a budget in the range of $170-200M
I'll probably go to see it because I go to the theaters several times per week. But I saw the trailers for this movie several times, and I didn't get too excited. The trailer made it look much more like a kid's movie.
And really -- I didn't know it was about He-Man from the previews. The title of the movie is "Masters of the Universe." They should have put He-Man in the title, even if He-Man isn't some massively popular figure

Are you from the 1920's whereby people would line up several times a week to see the latest Laurel & Hardy or Chaplin film? I seriously don't understand this unless you don't have a TV or something.
btw: L&H is actually pretty funny. fat guy and straight man is a good combo.

Theaters are too expensive to go see generic action slop. And he man has been a pretty stagnant IP for quite a while. I don't think young people even know anything about it.
This is the kind of movie that will be free on whatever subscription service within a few weeks so I wouldn't bother seeing it in theaters.

Probably because it was anticipated to be a dud, I collected the action figures in the 90s and watched the cartoon a bit as a kid, and I had no interest as a 42 year old man in watching the new movie, I figured it would be a major flop just like the new mortal kombat movie they released a few years ago, absolutely horrendous.
I have high hopes for the gremlins remake, they have been talking about that for a few years now and it still hasn't been released, I may even go to the theatre to watch it.

I decided to watch "Masters of the Universe" on a bored Monday at the office on 06/08/2026
I'm not a huge fan of this franchise; I never really watched the cartoons and such (though obviously I know who He-Man and Skeletor are)
But having seen this movie with no nostalgic or fanboy presets in mind, I actually found this movie to be solid. The 2-hours went by without much trouble.
It's almost a straight comedy with some action/adventure elements. And I think most of the comedy is good. A lot of the jokes center on the main character's dorkiness, which works most of the time. I like the early scene in the store. I also like the gym sequence (which has a great cameo) as well as the convo with the HR lady.
I like the casting for the main character. He looks the part physically. The scene where he finally turns into He-Man is a crowd-pleasing moment. The one flaw, however, is that he and Camila Mendes have very little romantic chemistry
The movie does an excellent job of handling the Skeletor character. He's hilarious at times (especially during the part where he gets in He-Man's mind), yet he remains intimidating and credible as the big baddie.
Not all of the comedy works. He-Man's roommate is just meh, and the "Fist-O" joke seems too juvenille and jarringly crass. Some gags start off nicely, but they go on too long
The visuals are a mixed-bag. The action scenes are nicely done. But the setting often seems like a blending of Guardians of the Galaxy and Lord of the Rings. It's so much of a blending, though, that it often feels derivative. Skeletor's side-kick "Evil-Lyn" also looks too much like Scarlet Witch in The Avengers.
Some costumes look awkward. He-Man's skimpy outfit might be one of the character's recognizable traits, but it doesn't look as good in live-action as it does in the cartoons: it's revealing to the point of awkwardness. And why is He-Man basically half-naked while Idris Elba is dressed like an astronaut about to walk on the moon?
Many details give the feeling of "I've-seen-this-already." There's the usual romance interest, multiple redemption arcs, and the big battle climax etc. It's essentially a standard high-budget action/adventure summer flick, seemingly following a template ... That's not entirely bad. Many people go to the theaters just to scratch that itch. But still - it speaks to lack of originality
In terms of quality, I think this movie is about the same as "Tron: Ares" last year. Coincidentally, they both seem to be heading for the same fate in box-office success, sadly.
6.5/10.
