Trump to ask Congress to make 15% ethanol-gas blend permanent

The Trump administration intends to ask Congress to allow E15, an ethanol-gas blend, to be sold at the pumps year-round, a U.S. official familiar with the matter told CBS News. The 15% ethanol blend is usually only available part of the year under a waiver from the Environmental Protection Agency as temperatures rise to help ease high gas prices.

The administration plans to make the request when it submits a supplemental funding request to lawmakers, the official said.Several requests on budget matters and non-budgetary matters were scheduled to be sent to the Hill on Wednesday. A lower 10% ethanol blend is sold all year, but the 15% blend is subject to waivers because gas with the higher ethanol content evaporates more quickly in hot weather and contributes to higher levels of air pollution or smog.

For this reason, federal rules normally require switching back to more costly blends. The move to make E15 available year-round represents the White House's latest effort to tame gas prices that have risen because of the war with Iran. President Trump repeatedly said on the campaign trail that he supported making E15 available year-round.

Well, it's not like anyone gives a crap about the environment. So, hardly surprising.

Doesn't 15% also burn faster therefore give you worse mileage?

Depends on how the engine is tuned, but generally lower MPG, higher power, runs cooler, but absorbs water and can be corrosive. There are environmental pros and cons too.

I'm no expert or advocate, I only know that 85% ethanol is great for drag racing hobbyists who like to go fast for cheap.

Yes E85 is a great low cost "race fuel" because it burns cool and is virtually detonation proof. I run it in one of my cars thats supercharged and it allows for an easy 200rwhp gain because you can crank the boost and timing up considerably. Ethanol doesn't provide the amount of energy as regular gasoline so it requires you to burn more of it for the same amount of work. Whats odd is E85 use to have to be a minimum of 70% ethanol and a few years back the regulations were changed and now it only has to be 50% ethanol content which seems backwards. If ethanol is cheaper why the incentive to put less of it in gasoline?

The manufacturers will play around with the blend rate though because E70 starts better in cold temps than e85. Back when I use to test my fuel the E85 would test %70 Ethanol in winter and around 88% in the summer.

Yes, ethanol fuel ratio is 9:1 and gasoline is 14.7:1.
