Tillis: SAVE America Act is ‘dead’ as time has run out to implement new voting rules

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) says the SAVE America Act, President Trump’s No. 1 legislative priority, is “dead” on Capitol Hill because there is not enough time to change election laws before the midterms — even if Senate Republicans muster 60 votes for the legislation, which is unlikely.

“Unless they do the work to get to the 60 votes, they know it’s dead, and so all this is theater,” Tillis told The News & Observer, repeating arguments he has made in Washington calling on GOP colleagues to move on to other priorities.

The North Carolina Republican continued, saying even if the election reform bill passes, there is no chance it is implemented before the Nov. 3 general election. The legislation — titled the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act — would require proof of citizenship for people registering to vote and for voters to show photo IDs to cast ballots.

The senator, who is not running for reelection, noted that it took his state a full year to implement voter ID requirements

.“Honestly, here in North Carolina, or in virtually any state, the ability, if we go back to when we implemented voter ID in North Carolina, it took a year to get everything in place with adequate funding,” he said.

Tillis also pointed out the lack of adequate funding or clear instructions on how to implement such a law in all 50 states before Election Day.

“Let’s assume you only allow early voting in the month of October,” he said. “Then do you honestly believe that we can have this thing up in 50 states? There’s no funding. There’s no specific implementation instructions.

People needing valid ID or proof of citizenship to vote is a no brainer, but let's all be serious, that's not what that act was for.

The entire thing has been nothing but theatre since it was proposed, and they've tried to sneak it in about a dozen times already.

As others have already pointed it out, he is the leader of the party and every president when he enters a new term has a certain amount of political capital to spend. He used all of it and more to bomb Iran, rather than get permanent legislation to preserve the integrity of our electoral proces. Next, he'll be a lame duck when Democrats wipe out Republicans in the midterms. Make all the excuses you want and keep on coping but that's the problem and that's my point.

I hear you. I think fighting for secure elections would have been worth it some time ago, but elections are essentially meaningless with rulings like Citizen United. It's a pay to play system.


Representative democracy is a scam. Trump walked all over that with totally going back on 99% of the things he campaigned on, mostly committing treason for a foreign country.


Then you have the more nefarious elements of social control like Bernayism, and mass marketing. Most people aren't even human due to their lack of being internally conscious enough to really evaluate the system.

Whatever bandaids that remain after his term will be ripped off, and the memory of this term will fade away into irrelevance.


The net effect of this term is a huge negative, with a critical chokepoint of the global economy being under IRGC supervision, and creating a 4th hegemony will all that will be remembered.

Bi-Partisan is usually meaningless, 99.9% of legislation is bi-partisan and is total trash.
