I can't find any reviews of the movie. I dunno. seems kinda weird. muh guess is the studio wants to do anything to prevent a flop for various reasons. it seems like positive reviews would have come out by the boatload if it was a good movie it opens in 2 weeks and nothing.

1) people don't go to theatres much

fun fact: studios make the most money in the first month of film release (thats why opening weekend so important)....in later timeframes the profits shift over the theatre and distribution. first the Js get their cut though. not to mention it is an industry rife with fraud about making a profit or not not matter how profitable through creative accounting.

Yeah the revenue split between studio and exhibitors (movie theaters) is a sliding scale, with the first week(s) heavily in favor of the studio. It might be a 90/10 studio/exhibitor split in the first week and then gradually slides towards exhibitor's favor in the later weeks.

The opening weekend is also very important because it dictates the performance of the movie for the entire product life cycle of the movie. If it makes $100 million the opening weekend, they know it will generally make 50% of that the following weekend, and so on. Stronger opening weekend means stronger overall theatrical box office, which means stronger home video, streaming and Pay TV licensing, merchandising, etc. The studios have Ultimate projection models and can drop in opening weekend box office receipts into the model and have a good estimate of what revenue will be like for the next 10 years through all ancillary markets.
