Hinge Founder Has Created AI Dating App with No Profiles or Swipes








Hinge founder Justin McLeod announced an $18 million fundraise for his new dating company, Overtone.

McLeod stepped down from his CEO role at Hinge just last year, and Hinge owner Match Group — which also owns apps like Tinder and OkCupid — is helping to fund his new company, alongside FirstMark Capital and Pace Capital.

While details on the company are limited at this point, Overtone describes itself as “a voice- and audio-forward service, enabled by AI, that provides highly curated introductions.”

“Overtone is not a dating app,” McLeod wrote in the blog post. “By that I mean it’s not a social platform with profiles that reduce people to stats, quotes and photos. There are no opaque, algorithmic feeds trained on split-second impulses. And there’s no juggling likes, matches and chats across many people at once.”

It may seem odd for the guy who created Hinge to disparage algorithmic feeds and swiping, but the dating industry at large is evolving with the realization that users are dissatisfied with the status quo. A Forbes Health survey conducted in 2024 found that 78% of dating app users felt burnt out. The survey’s 1,000 respondents reported that they spent about 51 minutes per day on dating apps, but this time investment did not often yield fulfilling connections.

This has always been true - online dating is a mix of Sloot’s gon sloot and Chad paradise. I have to dig up that article where it showed the bottom 50% of men got 1% of the clicks lmao.

EVEN if this website showed the perfect looks matched man who was perfectly compatible for a female, they would turn him down and go for Chad. That is the issue with the low effort click for a date model - it needs to be harder with the scarcity effect, it’s just how the human mind works. More choice = less satisfaction

I doubt he created an app to rectify dating problems caused by apps. There's no financial benefit, as they all use on microtransactions to exploit it users. He'd lose so much money if everyone found their dream partner within days and stopped using it. I don't believe it. (Super Ded fkn Srs)

The impression I get of your personality is that you seem more interested in "winning" arguments rather than arriving at the correct conclusion of a given point.

To still try to reason with you though, my personal experience is that I'm probably 8/10, 6/10 women are very happy with me and are clingy as shit. If I were to fire up hinge again today, I could probably consistently sleep with a different 6/10 woman every week if I wanted to. Yes if a 10/10 theoretically appeared, they would want him but even delusional women understand generally that a 10/10 isn't appearing if they're 6/10 and they're generally very happy with me.

I'll give it shot when my current Hinge relationship ends, I'd love to see who it matches me with, but I already have a fairly targeted search algorithm in my head already to navigate hinge and bumble.

At some point the two people are going to have to see what each other look like. Once that happens, if the guy is short or a dork, or the girl is fat or whatever. You’re just going to ghost.

It seems like just delaying the inevitable. No one is going to meet another person in real life on a date without seeing the person first.
