How do people with money stay motivated to continue working?

I currently have about $5k in the bank and $40k in my retirement. Far from “real money” but with no debt this is the most I’ve ever amassed in my entire life (srs). I’m already thinking ahead towards how I can exit the work force and live off my savings forever. I can’t imagine any scenario where I’d rather continue wage slaving, even for a respectable salary, once I have enough to make it.

How do people with money not ragequit? If you know you can survive without your job, what’s the point?

My mom’s boyfriend is sitting on a $1.5 million dollar investment account and two ~$1 million dollar properties in Florida that he inherited, yet the guy still refuses to retire. He’s in his late 50s and complains about his job constantly. I don’t get it at all.

My grandma is 76 and also continues to work full time. She isn’t nearly as well off, but has a paid for house, a pension and a brokerage in the low 6 figures. I’ve encouraged her to retire many times. Her response is always “what will I do all day, sit home?” She plans on working forever and it breaks my heart srs.

Even if I had a “measly” nest egg (my current target is $250k), I would do everything in my power to minimize expenses and use strategies like covered call ETFs or rental properties to escape the matrix. Working 10-20 hours a week is still acceptable, but man I don’t see how people continue on devoting their entire lives to a meaningless job.

Living like IronManlet or r32gojirra is the way to go brahs.

Because the money was never the complete reason why they became successful in the first place.

Also, to become successful it generally requires a period of time where you put business above all other considerations. Which eliminates much of your social life, so many people don't have anything else in their lives after a long enough period.

Prob for kids and grandkids srs.

I want to save as much as possible for my kids so they can have a good down payment for a house when the time comes, or whatever else (unless they're fuk ups then they wont get chit)

Would probably want to retire if I have grandkids and would offer to watch them instead of working

Many reasons. First of all, most people who become successful on their own either like what they're doing or are obsessed with money. Many people have families they want to make extra money for. Some just want to show off. I could think of several other reasons

Yeah I know a guy in his 60s, he got 2 million in 401k and has a pension on top of it.

He worked past the min age for the pension and "retired" to collect it then picked up a contract at a new job to keep working

He's overweight and has what looks like diabetes sores

I don't get it at all but his identity seems to be tied to his job.
He doesn't work super hard in reality he mostly talks about himself from what I seen but he's been around in the industry so long people will hire him just on that

He will drop dead while still employed. Srs

You cant save your way into anything, it must be invested. That said, you better start investing more heavily because by the time your kids are looking for houses the avg price should be at least 1 million.

Tough to say. Remember, the Baby Boomers only have about 10-15 years left until they're all gone. Obviously popular areas will continue to have strong housing demand, but there are also going to be a lot of homes with few to no buyers and can be had for very little.

$1.5mm is borderline to retire at his age. He's gonna get killed on taxes on the sale of the second house.

My plan is to work another 16 months and then retire. I want to spend some money on house improvements before I retire.

Because there is always a bigger house, nicer land, faster cars, ect.
We used to downgrade life at retirement, now the only reason people do that is because they are forced too financially.

Hate to admit it, but that's pretty much me to a tee. I guess I have linked my success and value to my job and keeps me going.

Might not be the best mindset but it's better than being hooked on crystal meth.

Although never did meth who knows, maybe it's great, but results from others say not so.

Depends what you mean by “have money.”

Your definition of working is trading your time for money.

People that “have money” ie rich people have figured out how to make money without trading their time for it. Their “work” is having other people do the work for them, but they are still earning money from the deal.

Why would they give that up?

If you could have your money work for you and still have new income come in, while at the same time still go do what you want, wouldn’t to keep doing that too?

When you’re actually rich, you end up having access to much better deals and opportunities than a regular person. People want to work with you because you have demonstrated success in the past.

Because once you check out it's very difficult to start back up if you decide there's something else you want/need.

I'm unlikely to just walk back in to my same position and it was difficult to get to this level in the first place. Think of it like if you were a great athlete but hated the sport you played but you worked extremely hard to make it to a professional league and get a hefty 1-year contract worth $10 million. You're not going to retire at 23 years old with $10 mil to your name after working hard to make it. Even if you hate the sport, in theory you're probably going to make a solid 10-15 year career out of it if you can milk it for even more money.
